tOSU at Minnesota, Thurs. Sep 2nd, 8 ET on Fox

I don't wanna check 145 pages
why was Miller missing?
Why was Banks and Cam Brown missing? I assume Cam still dealing with achilles which is a really rough recovery

They never say why for sure.

Miller sounds like COVID. Banks was there and could have played according to Day. Brown didn't even travel so no idea but doesn't sound great.

HELMET STICKERS:
  1. The Buckeye offensive line: The big eaters got it done. Minnesota recorded just two quarterback hurries all night, and just a single tackle for loss. Oh, and no sacks.
  2. Miyan Williams: This cat not only put the first points on the board with a 71-yard scamper midway through the first quarter, but finished with an eye-popping 125 yards on just nine carries. Nine. Carries.
  3. Chris Olave: Stroud targeted the senior captain six times and connected with Olave four of them for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Olave is the best in the business.
HELMET STICKERS:
  1. Haskell Garrett: see above. Gotta live a big-man touchdown.
  2. Zach Harrison: a strip-sack and a tackle for a loss
  3. Denzel Burke: for a guy nobody expected to start, Burke recorded a trio of pass breakups. He didn't play a perfect game by any stretch, but he made some key plays when it mattered.

OHIO STATE'S SIX TOUCHDOWNS WERE SCORED ON AN AVERAGE OF OF 54 YARDS.

THE BUCKEYES SCORED 35 POINTS, IN 5:35 OF POSSESSION....

My comments...by the way, I'm so thankful for the return of college football so I can complain and worry about something besides politics and COVID.

1. The Gant roughing the passer call..that is just BS. He had his hands up to block the pass not to knock the QB in the head. Could've been such a game changing play.
2. Fingers crossed that Proctor is OK. We need him badly.
3. Henderson seems to be the real deal. Want to see him and Williams rotate. That is it
4. Why was Crowley in at RB for run out the clock time? That should be our #1 guy.
5. How good was Justin Fields? Man his control and touch especially on the move will be missed. CJ struggled on the move and MNs defense is not good. CJ never got sacked and barely got touched. He will need to improve in a hurry as better defenses will pressure him all day.
6. Punter does not appear to be a position we can count on to flip the field.
7. Loved seeing Haskell rumbling down the field for the TD. So glad he is back to anchor the young DL. Sawyer and JT both saw the field.
8. NCAA needs to change the targeting rules. Just stupid...so tired of watching all the reviews.

Thanks for letting me rant...

GO BUCKS!!

- the thing that worries me the most (and its not even close) is the serious lack of a pass rush...Harrison made a great play but the D line was hardly getting noticeable pressure

Thought about that after I posted much the same thing, then recalled that the announcers kept pointing out how many offensive linemen they were using creating more gaps than the defense could fill on running plays, and making sure pass pro always had more men than the rushers.

Credit the Minny coaching staff for coming up with ways to cope with Ohio State's talent and credit Ibrahim for slipping through so many tackles. He kept Minny out of third and long most of the time he was in there.

To all the folk that posted that Day should have played the other QBs - poppycock! Getting CJ ready for Oregon next week was paramount, and pulling him (in first half) would have sent a negative message. After Oregon, there's three slam dunks, so that's when the other two or three QBs will get some minutes. Was very happy that the D substituted so many young 'uns into the schemes. Some rose, some showed they need more seasoning, but overall, I couldn't keep up with checking my roster sheet to see 'who that was'. Surprised at playing a true frosh at CB, but trust the judgement. Got burned, but to be expected. All the unexpected minutes will pay dividends down the schedule this year - and next - and next. Oline, wow, what more can be said. Read that only two QB hurries, no sacks.....against a stout D that was veteran heavy. Augers well for the rest of the year. (Were there many substitutions?) Not to worry about the D-line so much, as that was probably the biggest line tOSU will face until Clemson/Ok/Bama roll around. Now Coach J has some live data to work with. DBs, see potential (didn't realize how many supposed starters were missing), and rookie mistakes. However, will take mistakes trying hard, versus completions for not being there......Lbs, still a question mark in my mind, saw some agressiveness, but not so much shedding blockers and making the play. Believe it will come (PS, Terajda is the real thing folks). Special teams needs some work, although the field goal kicker (transfer) did well, Seibert needs to show he's 'the man' or tOSU will be in the portal again next year. Punting.....well, not in Crisman's league yet, haven't seen any stats, but didn't see the boomers Buckeye Nation is used to seeing. All in all, Day & Co put together a decent first game plan, on to Oregon! Go Bucks!

I don't usually do game threads during the game, superstition at this point, so I haven't read everyone's responses.

I'm still in the Aaron Rodgers camp, R-E-L-A-X. I was a little disappointed in the defense, which seemed to fold a bit after Ibrahim broke that long run on 4th down and had trouble getting off the field. To look at the bright side, Ohio State dominated a stat I just made up now, averaging 23.6 yards per minute of possession, compared to Minnesota's 10.5.

Lots of young guys getting their first experience in a tough game to get your first experience. Minnesota has a top 10 o-line and a top 10 back.

Survive against Oregon and you've got 4 weeks to work things out and get/stay healthy before going to Indiana.

Williams is RB1, with Henderson as RB2. You can sprinkle some Teague and Crowley in there, but Williams and Henderson should be getting most of the touches.

As far as the youth on defense excuse, they looked exactly the same as the experienced defense from last year. I even saw Tuf Eichenberg/Tommy Boreland walk out to hopelessly attempt to cover his guy man to man a couple of times early. Only thing that kept it from the same kind of score we saw against Bama was the extreme lack of talent on Minny's offense.

I sincerely hope there is big improvement through the year but at this point I'll shocked if it happens. I'm with Coombs where I was with Tressel after the USC game in 2008. My faith is gone.
It does feel exactly the same as last year in that the schemes feel far too complicated, resulting in confusion pre-snap and really bad situations like LBs trying to cover people man on man split out wide.

This was compounded significantly last night by the heavy, heavy rotation of players throughout the game.

Maybe the rotation calms down a bit and they all get more comfortable out there just getting lined up and there is improvement, or they all just get more comfortable from top to bottom in the heavy rotation and there is improvement, but I’m not overly confident.

The rotation feels like they either have confidence in everyone or confidence in no one. You hope for the former but reality suggests the latter.

Forgot about the roughing call and yeah it was totally BS. He literally landed on Morgan's back and his arm grazed Morgan's helmet. Totally changed everything too. We get the ball there inside the 30 and we probably score. From there who knows maybe the Gophers take some chances and turn the ball over even more. Such a BS call.

Also rewatched the Stroud INT and holy shit he had Wilson wide open because the corner blitzed. Like wide open with no one around him kind of open running down the sidelines.
