tOSU at Minnesota, Thurs. Sep 2nd, 8 ET on Fox

2. OHIO STATE AT MINNESOTA, SEPT. 2 (THURSDAY)
10353131.jpg

This season's opener comes the week before Ohio State’s anticipated showdown vs. nationally-ranked Oregon, a game most have circled as one of college football’s most important non-conference clashes of the season. That one would lose much, if not all, of its luster should the Buckeyes lose their first game as a likely double-digit favorite against the Gophers. Minnesota struggled last season and fell short of expectations, but P.J. Fleck’s team returns a veteran group led by a multi-year starter at quarterback and playing away from home on a Thursday night is never easy. Ohio State won’t look past this one, but it’s the definition of a trap with a bigger game looming.

Season-Opening Conference Games
The Buckeyes have never lost a season-opening conference game

10/4/24 - Purdue 7-0

10/6/34 - Indiana 33-0

10/1/38 - Indiana 6-0

9/27/52 - Indiana 33-13 (revenge)
9/26/53 - Indiana 36-12

From 1971 through 1976 (the Archie Griffin years, plus the year before and the year after) Ohio State opened with a conference opponent, something they had not done since 1954 and would not do again until 2017. The 40-season hiatus between season-opening conference games was by far the longest.

9/11/71 - Iowa 52-21
9/16/72 - Iowa 21-0
9/15/73 - Minnesota 56-7
9/14/74 - at Minnesota 34-19
9/13/75 - at #11 MSU 21-0 (revenge)
9/11/76 - MSU 49-21

Wasn't NU in 2004 a season opener?

EDIT

No it was a conference opener on the road. We opened with NC state or marshall or some such thing

Cincinnati. That was my first buckeye game!

This game worries me. Big veteran OL, great RB, veteran QB and 1 so so WR. They get everyone back on defense but maybe that's a bad thing for them. Getting to the QB was a big problem for them last season which at least is great since we will be breaking in a new QB obviously. Plus with our WRs it's tough if the opponent can't get pressure.

I don't think they can get the stops to beat us but a tough physical team week 1 just straight up sucks.

At least with this being week 1 we'll be ready and in week 2 with a full house for Oregon we shouldn't have any issue getting back up again.

Bought tickets for this game, today. Going with my 12yo son for a long weekend. Can’t wait!

My Minnesota friend is buying tickets for us tomorrow, should be a really fun time having the opener at a 100% stadium capacity on a Thursday night in downtown Minneapolis. I didn't realize you could buy them already though, my friend better not be letting me down haha.

I bought them through Vivid Seats and with zone seating. I’ve never purchased tickets through Vivid seats before so I hope I didn’t make an expensive mistake.
