Just because Ohio State played poorly doesn't mean we can't also talk about how bad the officiating was. It was bad folks. Comically bad.
When Jay Bilas is literally chuckling about it, it's a valid topic. Big Ten officiating has been incredibly poor across the board for years, and there's no sign of it changing. The only way to neutralize it is to not put yourself in a position to have it a factor. That's on the players and coaches.

I'd be interested to hear how his defensive game is developing... that might be what is keeping him from seeing the court (pure speculation on why... I have no idea where his defensive development is). Matta has been known to play freshman that hustle and get after it on defense. Case in point: there's this guy named Sam Thompson who is playing some pretty good defensive ball right now. He got some quality minutes today and only make one noticeable mistake, fouling Hardaway on a 3, that ended up not hurting too bad since Hardaway only hit 1 of 3 free throws. Other than that I thought he did a pretty good job against Hardaway and played better than Smith today. Unfortunately he doesn't even look to score on the offensive side so that limits the scorers to Sully, Thomas and Buford.

This team was a few possessions from pulling out the win. A made bucket here or there and it puts more pressure on scUM... who knows what would have happened. They need to shoot better than 39% from the field and not turn the ball over so much if they want to make deep tournament runs.

I just think this entire team has alot of growing to do. I guess some players are farther along than others, hence the starters and everyday subs... And I should trust the coach.

I'm just a fan of giving players their chances to shine.

Great post, BTW.

Or when it's the butt of jokes in other basketball-centric conferences. Is it possible for a league to "lock out" certain officials from officiating their games? Someone with the initials of T.V. comes to mind...

Frankly, I think the conference's officiating does a serious disservice come tourney time as well. We lament how tight tOSU plays at times, but I see it a lot around the conference. Look how horrific some of the nationally televised games have been. When kids are constantly on guard against the comical officiating, it causes issues.

When you have two different Mothership commentators calling out your officials within days during live game broadcasts, it's a valid topic.

Of course, at this point I'm conditioned to just disregard everything I know about the rules of basketball when watching the Big Ten.

Number of fouls called is not a valid argument in support of correct or fair officiating. In this case all it means is that M*ch*g*n fouled so much that it took home cookin' and incompetence just to make the ledger appear balanced.

Yes, the team played poorly. In no sport though do you forfeit your right to fairness just because you can't make an open shot.

Don't take it from me though - Jay Bilas, a straight shooter, fair commentator and consensus best in the biz was calling out missed calls that hampered the Buckeyes throughout the game. I reserve the right to be just as upset about that as I do about how poorly the team executed in the face of it.

Exactly...
No one is saying that the team did not play poorly.

Just out of curiosity and to follow up on Seth Davis' of SI's take that William Buford has cooled off, I just looked up his stats against ranked opponents this year:

Kansas (8-23 FG, 1-6 3FG, 21 PT)
Indiana (3-7 FG, 0-2 3FG, 8 PT)
Indiana (5-12 FG, 2-5 3FG, 12 PT)
TSUN (5-13 FG, 1-5 3FG, 12 PT)
Wisconsin (4-15 FG, 1-4 3FG, 11 PT)

He is what he is...a good, not great player. The worst thing about it is, he hasn't changed much since his frosh season. He's incredibly streaky. One game, he'll absolutely dominate, the next, he's invisible. Good player...not an all-timer by any means. I don't care where he finishes on the all-time tOSU scoring list.

Thad Matta is still 15-3 against Michigan. We're still 10-2 against Michigan in football since 2001. I'm pretty sure they still have a couple years before they can justify their arrogance.

Welcome to the party mother fuckers. Where you been?

The arrogance given the narrow wins under the circumstances you've been gifted is fantastic. :banger:
