Tom Herman (Former Head Coach FAU Owls)

Put yourself in Herman's shoes.

Could you turn one of those jobs down?

The bidding for coaches this off season will be unlike any time in modern history.

There is something to be said for being at a place (and in a conference) where you can build a power, win 10 games a year, and the fans/alum will build statues in your honor, vs a place where 10 wins a year will still get you fired. $3mm a year at Houston is a pretty good paycheck and affords him the opportunity to be super-selective about his career advancement opportunities. He's also been dragging his wife and kids around the country for a decade and has sounded pretty eager to drop roots someplace and settle in for a long haul.

Southern Cal, South Carolina, LSU, etc may all appear prestigious at first blush, but the grass isn't always greener on the other side ...

As Lou Holtz has said, bad jobs are the only ones that are ever open. If it was a good job the last guy would still be there.

Agree that USCeast and LSU aren't all that great compared to the Houston gig and he should wait on better jobs. But an opportunity at So Cal would be hard to pass up IMO. Great recruiting base, weather, etc. Have you been to a So Cal beach? And a fairly easy trip to the mountains to ski....it's an incredible life if you can pull it off.

Plus, he's from California.

USCal has been very similar to Texas. One 6 year window of national relevance in the 2000s but other than that has been an utter graveyard of coaches since 1980.
Yeah and the United States couldn't play hockey on the world stage until 1980. What's your point? A talented coach has everything they need right in their back yard. Everything is there to have a fantastic coaching career and lifestyle. Like I said: if you can pull it off.

If I were Herman I'd see just how soon they are thinking about expanding their facilities again. Recruits love that shit and he has been to the pinnacle of facilities so he has to know what it takes. Other than that $3mil per year to play the Juggalos, Memphis, Navy and UConn? Sign me up right the F now!

Plus, he has already pulled some pretty high ranked recruits and he now has a body of work to pull in more. Who knows what he can accomplish if he stays hungry.
