Tom Herman (Former Head Coach FAU Owls)

There is something to be said for being at a place (and in a conference) where you can build a power, win 10 games a year, and the fans/alum will build statues in your honor, vs a place where 10 wins a year will still get you fired. $3mm a year at Houston is a pretty good paycheck and affords him the opportunity to be super-selective about his career advancement opportunities. He's also been dragging his wife and kids around the country for a decade and has sounded pretty eager to drop roots someplace and settle in for a long haul.

Southern Cal, South Carolina, LSU, etc may all appear prestigious at first blush, but the grass isn't always greener on the other side ...

As Lou Holtz has said, bad jobs are the only ones that are ever open. If it was a good job the last guy would still be there.

There is nothing prestigious about SCe. Just saying.

One and done--that's kind of surprising (but you're right he could be quite the force to reckon with there).
It would be difficult for Herman to pass up a job that good - top 5 recruiting base, huge salary, he'll get a nice grace period after 15 years of Richt, and he'd be an instant legend (like Tressel) if he could win just one NC (it's been 35 years since Georgia won it all).

Agreed on all counts. The only currently-open job that would be better IMO would be Southern Cal (better recruiting base, less competition for recruits, less competition to get to the playoff, more prestigious program historically).

The only problem with Southern Cal is that it's been an unstable program for decades, with frequent coaching changes and scandals.

There are a handful of jobs that Tom should shoot for and it's hard not to have Georgia as one of them. Not quite the highest pedegree but right there and a very fertile recruiting ground. Just off the cuff I would say there are 10-12 programs that you have to seriously look at. Until one of them comes up and you feel great about the offer you stay put at Houston IMO.

UGA is a football crazed state with pretty much all the talent you ever need in a 300 mile radius and they are absolutely starved for a winner.

The right guy goes in there and not only can he do damage, he can stay forever.

Tough gig to pass up in the HC business
Exactly. But they should hire Kirby Smart. And So Cal should go after Chip, Kyle, Hairball's bro or anyone else. Then Tom can sit tight a while. Yes I am selfish.

What would be nice about this move, if we would like to see Herman as the OSU head coach down the line when Urban hangs it up, is that Georgia is a good enough of a program to stay at for many years, but not elite enough to keep someone from leaving to go to a true blue blood. Maybe in 4 years or so when Urban doesn't feel like shitting on record books, Herman could come up and miss little beat.
