Tom Herman (Former Head Coach FAU Owls)

Herman's has no ties in the south or eastern seaboard. All of his experience & personal ties have been in California, Texas & Ohio.

If he ends up someplace outside of those three states he would be best served at a program that still relies heavily on one or more of them.

Nebraska would be wise to keep on eye on him.

He didn't have ties in Ohio before he came here right? He seemed to do a pretty good recruiting Texas from Columbus so he could probably do that from any name school. Meyer went from BG to Utah, to Florida, to OSU and never seemed to have a hard time bringing in players. I don't think location matters for the right gig.

He was born in Ohio and his family in Cincy. There is still some familiarity.

We are also talking about the difference between being an assistant able to focus on a few players and a head coach responsible for maintaining contacts with the entire network of HS coaches and players.

Meyer has been somewhat unique in his ability to recruit anyone from anywhere at anytime. That is an exception to the norm. There's no guarantee Herman will be able to operate at that level. His best bet is to leverage the regions where he is already strong and then look for a few key assistants who are strong in other areas.

Put him smack dab in the middle of a hot bed area like Georgia and he would do fine. You are right, Urban is the exception but it's proof it can be done.

I think one of the biggest mistakes AD's make is trying to find a guy primarily based on ties to the area. Just get a great coach and leader and things will work out.

Cultural ties matter. So do prior relationships with the local HS coaches.

One leader for the South Carolina job
JC Shurburtt - 11 hours ago

A leading candidate has emerged for the open South Carolina job.

University of Houston head coach Tom Herman is the clear leading candidate for the vacant Gamecocks job, according to multiple sources.

Herman has been on the radar of South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner since 2012, his first as offensive coordinator at Ohio State under Urban Meyer.

Cont'd ...

It came from several (i.e. multiple) UPS girls...
