One leader for the South Carolina job
JC Shurburtt - 11 hours ago

A leading candidate has emerged for the open South Carolina job.

University of Houston head coach Tom Herman is the clear leading candidate for the vacant Gamecocks job, according to multiple sources.

Herman has been on the radar of South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner since 2012, his first as offensive coordinator at Ohio State under Urban Meyer.

Cont'd ...

Lost me at Charlie Strong being a candidate unless they think he's getting canned later this year. That would be like the Condoms saying their short list was Meyer and Saban.

Hopefully Herman knows better. The South Carolina job is a career killer.

Re: Herman agreed to a five-year contract worth at least $6.75 million, which can increase substantially if he reaches certain performance incentives. New University of Houston football coach Tom Herman's contract includes a steep buyout if he leaves within the first three years of the deal. Herman must pay $2.25 million if leaves for another job before Feb. 28, 2018, according to details obtained Thursday by the Houston Chronicle through a Freedom of Information Act request. The buyout amount decreases to $1 million on Feb. 28, 2019, and to $500,000 on Feb. 29, 2020.

I disagree, (in my opinion) staying at Houston and eventually having a losing record would be a career killer. You have to "strike when the iron is hot". He is the "hot coach" this year, he may not still be the "hot coach" in 2017 or 2018.

So far in the short time Herman has been at Houston he (apparently) has done all right recruiting. However, over the long haul I think the Big XII schools in Texas will get the top prospects, which will leave Houston having to settle for their leftovers, etc.

The University of South Carolina isn't that bad of job, i.e. Power 5 conference and school with lower football expectations than a some other SEC East teams (ex. Georgia, Tennessee, & Florida). Clemson is proving that a South Carolina team can be a national contender too.

Just sayin': It all depends on what Herman's career aspirations are; but I don't think the South Carolina job would necessarily be a career killer.

2mil buyout doesn't seem like a monumental road block anymore. I suppose it eliminates all the cheapskates in Big though.

I'd hate to see him leave Houston after one year, but if Texas fires strong and offers Herman the job, he'd be crazy to turn it down. He'll own Texas in recruiting and they have a couple solid DT QBs that he can utilize which will help them succeed early. Obviously the downside is their crazy fan base and AD situation, but the positives outweigh the negatives by a landslide.
