Tom Herman (Former Head Coach FAU Owls)

Then why does coach after coach fail there? And where do meddling big-money boosters land on that list.

Mack had a pretty good run. Reportedly he got lazy with recruiting and the talent dropped off.

Strong was doomed from the start.
everyone hated him day 1. then he started kicking established starters off the team which added to the size of the rebuild.

now, that team will have a pretty decent amount of talent already in house next year.
the question will be how quick can Herman get them to buy into and grasp his system.

No one agreed. Mack was still he coach when he posted that and Herman hadn't yet lost to VT.

Yeah, I guess I hadn't checked the date too closely. Although, I went back and looked at it and I think that there was a bit of outright disagreement and a lot more of people reading his post (incorrectly) as suggesting that Herman was going to be the NEXT Texas HC and disagreeing, correctly, with that. Still, nobody else came right out and agreed then that he would eventually be the Texas head coach, so credit there. I think that once Strong started to struggle and Herman took the Houston job, many figured that Herman would be next at UT.

I think he'll do a helluva job there. I thought so waaaay back and what he was able to do with Houston so quickly was Urban-ish. He's going to do for UT what UFM did for UF.

One would think so. He did have some odd losses at Houston though. We'll see if he can match Urban for intense consistency over time. If you don't win the little games, the big ones aren't really so big.

Wow. I would like to think Tom has been up front with his players...

Houston Players Blast Coach on Twitter For Ditching Team

And I'd like to think Santa Claus is alive and well at the North Pole. What we'd like to believe and what is, ain't necessarily the same thing.

I listened to Herman's interview on Mike & Mike last week. Honestly, I didn't come away from it feeling very good about it. His own explanation of how he handled his last months/final exit from the team sounded quite disingenuous to me. He started by generally saying he'd "never lied to his players," kept them informed, etc. BUT, when it came down to specifics, he mentioned like a total of two conversations he'd had, starting after the loss to SMU: "the only people I've talked to was the University of Houston...I made that very clear to them...and then really the only other time we talked about it was the week of the Memphis game...assured them that there was no agreement in place...talked to them a little bit on the field...I met with the captains...and let them know again that there was no agreement in place, I haven't met with anybody." Listening, I thought, well, fine Tom, but even if true you weren't talking to any other team, I'm damn sure your agent was talking to them, and you sure as hell were talking to him--probably 3 or 4 times a day. And, your "talking" to your current team consistently--by your own admission--was invariably to deny you were doing anything to leave them.

Bottom line was he sounded more like he was nit-picking language on the witness stand, rather than being a stand-up guy. I didn't go away from listening to that believing he'd been straight with his team. Seemed more cleverly manipulative of the narrative than forthright.

He's entitled to go work wherever he pleases, it's his life. Just as he's entitled to be married to whoever will have him, or to terminate the marriage if it isn't working out. However, if the way you terminate your marriage is by first sneaking around, cheating, and lying about it to your spouse ("I was always completely forthcoming with my wife. I repeatedly assured her that I was not involved with anyone else...right up until the moment I packed my bags and handed her the divorce papers.")...Points off in my book.

Start interview about 6:30. Tell me if there is something wrong with my ears, or is his interpretation of how he dealt honestly with his team total BS.

College football players aren't always accused of being smart. If I go play for Texas, I understand that my coach could always get fired due to not meeting high expectations. If I go play for Houston, I understand that my coach could always leave for a better job because he's coaching freaking Houston. If I don't want my coach to leave for a better job, I have better odds of that not happening by not committing to a stepping stone, non power 5 program. Does Houston offer a degree in rocket science? After going through the recruiting process, how in the world do these players not know that most coaches will tell you, your family, the media etc...whatever it is they want to hear. You should commit to a school that is the best for your future. If you only go to a certain school because you committed to a person who makes millions of dollars in a cut throat, results based business to win football games, maybe you shouldn't be going to college. At the very least, you shouldn't have a twitter feed to show just how much you don't understand the basic concepts of being a college football player.

but if you woke up next to your new spouse in a 24 hour vegas wedding chapel, do you put the same weight on the vows you each took?

Players, administrators and boosters of stepping stone schools should understand going into it that "hottest up and coming new coach" types aren't sticking around should a blue blood come calling

That's all fine, guys. I'm just not fond of being gaslighted. Especially, when it's done so blatantly.

Speak if you will to the realities of college coaching employment, but what is inescapable to me is someone who characterized his conduct as honest, when by his own words he demonstrates the polar opposite in that he flat out lied to everyone's face. You can say they should have known better. So, what you're telling me is they should have understood his word wasn't worth the hot air that transported it? Good to know. I'll keep it in mind the next time I'm compiling that short list of people in the world whose character I trust and respect.
