Game Thread Toledo at tOSU, Sept. 10, Noon ET, BTN

Normally I would be upset with yesterday, but...

we should be happy. A win is a win this season. Period.

No matter who they play and no matter how they do it...just keep winning.

Another week and another game wiser for all of those freshmen playing.

It would be nice if Howard, Hall and Brown were reinstated next week but it's looking they won't be making the trip. These young guys are getting their cherries busted right now and that will only pay dividends down the road.

Miami will probably be at full strength, even though their guys were doing blow off of hookers asses on Shapiro's yacht. Lesson learned. Thanks NCAA.

Time to kick the shit out of Miami...again!!!!!

For everyone screaming for Miller to get in the game, how do we know what kind of practice the kid had this past week?
Not busting your chops here, buxfan4life, but I've never quite understood the fascination with "how a player practiced this week." What in the world does that have to do with anything?

My issue isn't so much that Miller didn't play, it's with the way Coach Fickell talks about Miller as though he regards the young man as almost equal with Bauserman. Bullshit. It's clear from yesterday's game that Coach Fickell regards Bauserman much more highly at the moment. So just tell us that, coach. The dichotomy between words and actions is just absurd.

So, if Miller was throwing 50% of his passes into the waiting hands of the DBs all week long, you still think he should be put out there in a tight game situation with even more pressure than in practice? I know that situation is highly unlikely, but this is what those of us who talk about how a player does in practice during the week thinks about. In my playing days, the week of practice leading up to a game had a ton to do with whether or not you would see the field come gametime. You could have been a starter for 10 games straight, but if you messed up a bunch during practice in a certain week, and the others who played your position did better, than most likely your starting streak was going to end. So, how a player performs in practice during a week has a lot to do with how coaches deem if a player is ready to see the field.

As to your second point, you really need to take whatever coaches say (any coach, not just Ohio State's) with a huge grain of salt because they are not going to really tell you anything. In Fickell's mind (or Bollman's, or Siciliano's), Joe has not locked down the QB position just yet, and there is always a chance that Miller can be put into a game. Don't get all bent out of shape because Fickell is using coachspeak when addressing the press.

This is not directed at you in particular, Max, but I feel many need to ease up on their overall expectations about how this team is going to fare over the next 3 games while some talented players are still on the sidelines, whether it be suspensions or otherwise.

I say trust the coaches. I know some here are going to go off on how Fickell has no track record to consider, but the guy has been around a very successful team/program for awhile and has some knowledgable staff to help him with his evaluations of the players.

good grief, what a bunch of negative nancies on this board. wake the [censored] up, people. we lost a HOF coach, were down 8 starters, and were going up against a team that will win 10 or 11 games this year. we have a VERY young team, in case you didn't notice. stop expecting every game to be a blowout. overcoming adversity makes you stronger.

I am not being negative towards the team. I am just perplexed as to the manner that Fickell is handling the QB situation. I know he's new to this, but that game yesterday looked like he was trying to imitate Tress, not be coach Fickell. The only difference is that Tress would not be making statements about both QB's being even and then not give the other at least a series or two against Toledo.

I hate to say it, but Fickell looked like he was in over his head yesterday. I hope that I am wrong and he proves me wrong, but it's tough to learn on the job as a new head coach at OSU under the circumstances which he was dealt.

I agree with buxfan. With everything going on between suspensions/investigations the tighter the tongue the better. two games into the season is a little early to start questioning everything right? we will learn more game by game. Hopefully by miami we have a better sense of whats going on

As I've said, I'll begin to trust Coach Fickell when he's established a reason for me to do so. The fact he's handling the Miller QB situation with the media in the manner he is leads me to "trust" him less. Though I'll acknowledge that how coaches deal with the media (and through them, the fan base) is pretty far down on the list of important skills for head coaches.

Coach Fickell was dealt a tough hand in taking over this team. But being the head coach of the Buckeyes has always been one of the most demanding in college football. The rewards are great; the demands are consequently also great. We'll see how well he does in meeting them.
