Game Thread Toledo at tOSU, Sept. 10, Noon ET, BTN

If they want to make the most plays, I think Braxton should be the guy. If they want a guy that won't make many mistakes but doesn't make that many plays, they should go with Bauserman. IMO, if you want to go far in your season, you choose the game changer, not the game manager. However, if they decide to go with Joe this week I'd understand why and I'll back him 100% against the crybabies.
Wait, what was that? You think Miller should play? I don't think you've said that yet...

I followed this thread during the game and after the 100th time you've posted a version of this in one thread it gets tiring.

This season is reminding me more and more of 2008.

This shit is reminding me a LOT of 2004. Bottom line for me today: I'm glad we won, but if you're not going to redshirt Miller, there was no excuse for not playing him today, short of some undisclosed injury or behavioral problem.

As much as everyone is clamoring for Braxton, a bigger issue has been the overall inexperience with backs. Hyde missed a number of holes and cutbacks during the course of the game and Rod Smith is obviously having some issues holding onto the ball. I would hope that once the backfield becomes a little more stable that we will see a better running game which will lead to a more consistent offense.
There is so much inexperience in this team at the moment with suspensions and injuries...it's too bad that many don't seem to have the patience or understanding to see this

10 Thoughts...

6) QB: right now...tOSU is using a game manager, not a game changer. Pick your poison folks. Choose wisely...

Against tougher teams, a game manager is only going to be successful if he has some game changers around him. None have shown themselves yet (with a nod given to Stoney, but a TE can only do so much).

Personally, I think that if we stick with Joe B as a strong #1, as we saw today, we will lose a few games. If we switch to Miller as the #1, we will also lose a few games. The difference is that with Miller, you are investing in the future.

Our best bet is to mix them up and work Brax in as much as possible. Not playing him today was a mistake (in my) imo.

Send Fick an email with your thoughts. Spell "L-O-S-E" right and he's probably more likely to consider your opinion.

Zanders is right though so maybe he should send Fick a message? Both QB's played well last week, and we were told all summer how both were close. So what's it telling a kid that when the game gets close that we can't trust him with the ball in his hands? Boeckman was pretty good (better than Bauserman) but yet we benched him for a freshman Pryor and I dont think Pryor is anywhere near Braxton as far as passing.

Like I said early in the thread and after reading Ozone I was kinda surprised they saw one aspect that I did... We had no ability to go misdirection, and the one time we did it goes 30+yards for a TD. Those Toledo players were going all out wreckless with no regaurd for the cutback/going the other way. Sure maybe by staying with Bauserman it may have got us the victory. At the same time though maybe by putting Braxton in we walk away comfortably with this game. You never know until you do it.

I really thought the qb situation was poorly handled but what do I know? If you say it's neck and neck then you better give the kid a shot. What's it saying if you hear that and then you don't play for a whole week? If it's Bausermans team then just freakin come out and say Bauserman is definately the guy.

It was sad though to hear people boo Bauserman. While I'm in the boat of let Braxton get the reps and grow as the year unfolds, no player should get booed.

Fickell's comments on the quarterback situation from his presser:

Q. You talk about adversity. Was it good to be in the fire in that kind of situation? Was Braxton Miller available, and what were your thoughts on using him or not using him?
COACH FICKELL: We've got a plan going into the game just like we had a plan defensively going into the game, and we had to adjust things defensively. Offensively we had to do the same thing.
Those guys are good with it. They understood the situation. We know it's about us. It's about this whole team. Sometimes your plan adjusts and changes on the run, and that's what happened today. We were going to use him, we had a plan maybe to be in that second quarter, very similar to last week, but it just didn't work out the way we had probably planned it in our head, and we'll continue to move forward.
...

Q. Luke, you said you planned to get Braxton in there in the second quarter or whatever but something changed. What changed? Was it the fact that it was a close game?
COACH FICKELL: No, it was just the flow of the game. It's just one of those gut decisions you've got to make out there. We've made some changes defensively that we had planned that maybe we were going to go with, and things just weren't going the way we had them planned. You know, we thought for momentum reasons and some different things, we just want to stick with where we were, and those are questions that, us as a staff, we'll make sure we sit down and evaluate and look back over to see if there's anyway if we had to do it over again, if we'd do it different.
...

Q. For clarification, do you still feel you have two quarterbacks or do you feel you have a starter and a back up at this point?
COACH FICKELL: No, I feel we have two quarterbacks. I've got confidence in both of them. One just hasn't had as many opportunities just yet. I feel like we've got two middle linebackers, but one has to start, and one probably played a little more than the other. I feel like we have two Will linebackers. I know everybody wants to talk about the quarterback more so, but they know we have confidence in them. They know we need them both, and it's our job to make sure we can handle it the right way.

My .02 from the game;

-A bunch of young guys for OSU slept walked and had a very good MAC team give them all they could handle....but still found a way to win. The inconsistency is what you get with such a young team. Frustrating but not unexpected.

-Vision is what sets the MoC's and Beanies apart from the merely very good. From what I saw today Hyde and Smith missed a lot of holes.

-Very good test for the D and overall pleased with the result.

-Sometimes I wish our braintrust could be as good as these undermanned teams at finding ways to keep getting the ball to our main difference maker instead of trying to do everything fairly well.

-My biggest concern, beside injuries, is that JB is clearly not going to be good enough to get it done and Miller got zero playing time. Its a catch 22 in that the offense probably isn't going to open big leads very often and Miller can't develop standing next to LF. No good answer on this one.

I'm willing to chalk this one up to youthful inconsistency looking ahead to Miami and being a little full of themselves after Akron. We will know a lot more after next week.

I thought Toledo's Recievers were outstanding at blocking out wide. Those screen passes really hurt us big.

-Besides the score that was set up by the blocked punt, and those two big plays (70yrd td, and that run) I think our defense played well.

-JB is not good enough to lead this team, and while Braxton may not be the answer this year he certainly may be NEXT year.

I know it's early but I cannot state enough right now though how disappointed I am that Braxton isn't getting more reps. Again if its not a two QB system and Joe is the guy then stop with the games and give Joe the full confidence of the staff.

My thoughts...

This was one of the most frustrating and disappointing games I've ever been to, and I've seen my share of close games against outclassed opponents, losses, and even embarrassing beatdowns (I had student tickets in 1999 & 2000).

This is the part where most people would say, "Not to take anything from Toledo but...". Well, I'm about to take something away from Toledo. From my vantage point at the top of 36B, they ran about three different plays with success against the Buckeyes - HB screen to the right, WR screen to the right, and the single wing/wildcat run up the middle. Most everything else they tried was pretty forgettable. I do give credit to Coach Beckman and his staff though for finding something that was working and for the most part refusing to stray from it until somebody on the other side made an adjustment.

Part of the reason I feel OK taking something away from Toledo's performance is because I'm about to take much more away from Ohio State's. How you can allow yourself to keep getting beat on the same three plays is beyond me. How you can fail to immediately double-down on wanting to kick some asses and step on some necks after a team like Toledo had the gall to go for two in the first half in your own house is beyond me. How you can continue to use that punt formation with six-foot gaps across the line of scrimmage is beyond me.

I'm glad to see they finally got around to installing a package for Maurice Wells. It's too bad that it came so late that they're now trying to run it with a 240 LB. fullback instead.

Rod Smith - I love ya man, but if I were in charge you would not be getting touches in scoring range or or in 4th quarters until you EARN them with flawless ball security.

How is Buchanan's timing in getting punts off? He seems especially slow to me. I'm no coach, but I see him taking as many as three steps after taking the snap, and seems like about two too many. At least he's good at killing it near the opponent's goal line. That's going to be an important skill as this season wears on, since it seems like the Buckeyes will have to punt from FG range a lot.

I am loathe to weigh in on the QB situation. I've read the entire thread at this point and know it has been flogged to death. However, I also have a couple thoughts on this subject that I don't think were expressed by others. First of all, I'm not in any sort of "bench Bauserman" camp. I think the booing, if directed at him, was despicable. I am in favor of keeping Miller in the mix though. Since they burned his redshirt and went out of their way to list him as "co-starter" at one point, I think it's a must. I understand not wanting to put the game on the shoulders of a true freshman when it's close. It's the head coach's job to find those reps though, and it's something that Coach Tressel did routinely. Once they got past the middle of the 2nd quarter though, they passed a point of no return. My main problem with this is that after that point, he Miller was precluded from having any impact on this game. If they had established him sometime early in the game though, it then doesn't become unreasonable to use him again later in the game if you need a spark.

The other part of the QB situation that I didn't understand it the apparent "trust issue". I can understand not trusting a a freshman QB. But if you trust Drew Basil to attempt FGs and you trust Rod Smith with 4th quarter carries, how do you justify not trusting player whose redshirt was burned just a week before, who was listed as a co-starter, and who in his limited action has not made a single mistake or lapse in execution like the other two players I just mentioned? Maybe there is a good reason that I'm not privy to, but based on what I've seen, there is a bit of a disconnect.

Finally, the most disappointing thing I saw today... First half, trailing 15-8. The defense is on the field and Toledo has the ball at midfield with all the momentum. Half of the players turned to the crowd, jumping, arms waving, exhorting us to make some noise. It pissed me off tremendously. I can at least speak for the top end of 36B - we had already been making noise and did so throughout the rest of the game. The crowd as a whole didn't seem all too different from any of the others I've been a part of in the past when the Buckeyes sleepwalked against an inferior opponent. All that considered, and after all the tremendous mistakes that caused them to be trailing, they were looking to the crowd for help??? That's one of the most troubling things I've ever seen out of a Buckeye team - when it was time to step up they didn't seem to be looking to each other, they were looking to us.

Why is it the more I read from this thread the more upset i'm getting with Fickel? Do any of you think part of the reason he didn't get in the game is Luke just didn't manage the TEAM very well this time. Instead of thinking about times he could use Braxton I'm sure he was preoccupied wondering how to stop the screens and swing passes.

When they've showed him on the sideline (I don't fault him for this) but you can tell he still has a connection with the defense and probably is still not use to thinking about those offensive things as well. You see him doing defensive hand signals and getting all excited and stuff during defense.

I agree though the fact that the defense couldn't stop those few plays from Toledo was very frustrating... I contribute that to Toledo being a little bit more physical out wide than we're use to though. You have to remember Page, the running back they have, and that veteran offensive line may be one of the more balanced teams we face this year.

Defensively though there's no way they should have done as well against this offense that we have. I contribute it to having no playmakers right now on offense. I was able to always tell if Braxton was in the game or not when it came back from commercial by the crowds reaction. There wasn't that buzz like MoC, Pryor, or Ted created. That's something that Braxton brings to this offense.
