Game Thread Toledo at tOSU, Sept. 10, Noon ET, BTN

I'm going to just say it nicely, but here are a few of my thoughts.

-We were outcoached today by Toledo. If you these two squads had even talent, Toledo wins.

-I'm concerned by the lack of playmakers until the suspended players come back. Very, very concerned.

-If you are going to struggle on offense, why not do it with the future of your program and let him grow from it? I say this especially when coach Fickell consistently plays that 1A/1B card. He's killing the confidence by not showing any faith in Brax. When next year rolls around and the dust settles, he's your guy.

-I am pulling like hell for Fickell, but we lost a lot when Tress resigned. Fickell will find his sea legs as the head coach, but the magnifying glass at OSU is quite large..... He can't win by trying to imitate Tress, he's got to beat down his own path.

Like I said early in the thread and after reading Ozone I was kinda surprised they saw one aspect that I did... We had no ability to go misdirection, and the one time we did it goes 30+yards for a TD. Those Toledo players were going all out wreckless with no regaurd for the cutback/going the other way.

Cutbacks are a form of misdirection, and the zone blocking scheme that the Buckeyes run lends itself to cutbacks which can punish a defense for overpursuit (see also: Beanie Wells vs. Wisconsin, 2007)

To my non-expert eye, it seems there were a lot of ingredients in creating a lackluster running game today. First of all, the line left a lot to be desired at times. Second of all, I think Toledo was keying on the run a bit and daring Bauserman to beat them with his arm. Since he was able to do little of that, Toledo was not dissuaded from that gameplan. Finally, I don't think the backs that are available at the moment are equipped for cutback running. The South Stands usually suck, but one thing that you CAN see from there are the running lanes as they develop. A couple people in this thread noted that the backs seemed to miss holes and lack vision at certain points in the game. Having seen it live from a good vantage point, I would agree. Neither Hyde nor Smith have the experience hit all of those lanes, and in the case of Hyde, it's probably not part of his skill set at all. as osugrad21 noted, "he runs his track, nothing more.

In the case of the misdirection TD play that you noted, the play didn't rely on a cutback to create misdirection and punish overpursuit by Toledo. It was done for him, baked into the play in the form of play action. I think it,s a legit question to ask why more plays like that weren't being run given the personnel that's available to them at the moment.

EDIT: having seen the play on TV for the first time, it looked more like a zone read play. That didn't look like a misdirection play to me - the misdirection would have been for Bauserman to keep it since most of the rest of the offense was flowing in the other direction. this particular play looked more like the Bucks threading the needle, with the OL creating a hole and the RB findingmit on the same play. That re-assessment notwithstanding, I still stand by my point about the playcalling not matching the personnel on the whole.

Yeah Fickell struggled a bit today with game management some of his calls on penalties during the game were baffling. Bauserman was struggling but he didn't go to Miller in attempt to get a spark and by the 4th qtr it was already too late to go to a freshman cold off of the bench.

Also on Hyde we need to teach him a stiff arm or something. There were numerous times he was one on one in the hole tried to run over a guy on to get submarined every time at the knees.

The team looked bad today but come on now, let's not act like Tressel dominated every MAC team to come our way. It was only a few short years ago when we struggled with lowly Ohio University well into the fourth quarter, and that Bobcat team was worse than this Toledo team. Plus we were only without Beanie that game while. This game we were missing 8 starters plus our star quarterback.

Coach Heacock and the defensive staff obviously know football better than I do, but I'm very curious as to why they aligned the way they did on the short yardage 4th down conversions out of the wildcat.

IIRC, the lined up with two 3 tech's, and that left the middle right open and they converted in both times right through that hole. Just curious as to why the didn't put someone at a 1tech or at the nose.

Does anybody else remember 2002? OSU 23-Cincy 19.. the win secured by a last play Will Allen interception. OSU 19-Wisky 14.... the game only sealed after a late pick by Gamble. OSU 13-PSU 7... our only touchdown a Gamble pick six. OSU 10-Purdue 6... Holy Buckeye. OSU 23-Illinois 16 OT... Tim Anderson knocks their last-gasp pass down after two apparent Illini TDs. OSU 14-Michigan 9... Will Allen saves the day again. The 2002 NC game? nuff said.

I don't even have to check the archived posts to know the same critcisms were leveled after each of those games and we all know how that turned out. The bottom line is, shorthanded, we found a way to win against a talented and determined Toledo team whose coach knows us like a book (see Cincy 2002). Just like 2002, the defense stood up when it had to. Yeah , I'm pissed we didn't hammer them... but I spent almost all of 2002 pissed too.

Before throwing the baby out with the bath water consider this... the suspensions are actually helping us in a strange way because as the competition gets tougher those guys will be back, haven't been scouted and should be healthy. Fickell didn't give Miami a good look at Braxton at QB or Berry with extended time at tailback so there's still an X factor if Hall and company are still out.

After 2002's weekly heart attack I'm prepared to just watch this unfold before passing judgement... but knowing how sweet that year ended up today's game actually put a little smile, or should I say shit-eating grin on my face.

BTW, just like the aforementioned 2002 games I erased the Toledo game from my DVR so fast I got a nosebleed.

How many games do you want to lose to get him ready when we have a solid game manager right now who made no mistakes today? One more mistake today and we lose.
We could win a lot of games with Joe B. and this defense.

Joe B was sacked and hurried into off balance throws that Miller could have made plays on. He's just not athletic enough. Overthrown balls for sure TD's, like Devin Smith.

I understand the whole maturity angle but I'm just selecting superior talent.

I understand your point, but your comparing talent against high school teams against talent in the college level.

I'm sure Raiders fans said the same thing and said JaMarcus Russell needed to start. We all know how that ended. And just like most Buckeye fans and Raider fans are clamoring for Pryor to start.

Miller has one game of experience, and he did well. But Bauserman played unreal in that same game. When Pryor was a freshman, Boeckman just couldn't do anything at all. We are still getting production from Bauserman and IMO he's playing smarter and better than Boeckman did. While I do think Miller should have gotten some reps in this game, I'm not going to say we need to bench Bauserman.

Well, it was a frustrating game to watch, but the good guys came away with a victory.

For everyone screaming for Miller to get in the game, how do we know what kind of practice the kid had this past week? How many plays does he have committed to memory, especially in the passing game with the check down progressions? I seem to remember someone (maybe it was Fickell?) stating that Miller only has about 10 plays he is comfortable running. I would believe that Joe has a much better grasp of the playbook right now and is a big reason that he is still the #1 guy. Just my opinion.

The defensive front where they leave a gap from guard to guard wide freaking open was giving me angina something fierce. Why were they giving up 10 -15 yards up the gut like that? Toledos OC definitely gets credit for seeing this weakness and exploiting it, but why didn't Heacock and Fickell correct that at some point in the game? That, to me, was my biggest beef with the coaching yesterday. I will give props to the Toledo offense because they played lights out, and some of those down field blocks they laid were nice, but the over pursuit by the D helped out on some of those plays.

Lastly, the OL got smacked around a bunch and that is the biggest concern I have going forward. The way the OL was almost a sieve on some plays yesterday was too reminiscent of recent Michigan style OL for my taste.

Overall, a win is a win. I am hoping the team comes out a bit more fired up and ready to go next week. Go Bucks!:osu:

This team was thrown for a loop by the late suspensions. Particularly of Jordan Hall(who much offensively was planned around. Chris Fields said as much OZone Board,BCast).
And Toledo had 2 weeks to game plan. Beckman has done a terrific job at Toledo and the will play for the MAC Championship and go Bowling.
We overcame a lot of adversity in this game, people! That will help us greatly next week and in the future.
Outside of some trick plays the defense was solid.
Without the blocked punt and late fumble there is no drama.
We won! :tongue2:
