Tiger Woods (Offical Thread)

Freddy Couples shoots 6 under and is leading the Masters after the first round. I go to ESPN.com (a self admitted mistake) and who is on the main page? Tiger of course.....re-f*cking-diculous. That dude is a douchebag, a douchebag that can really hit a golf ball, but a douchebag nonetheless.

Tiger's on the front of every sports website, not just ESPN, because that's what people want to know. It's the obvious lead story of round 1.

At the beginning of the week I really didn't care how Tiger fared, but I have to admit I'm starting to root for Tiger just because it's fun to see people get so pissed that he's doing well and getting all the headlines.

3 GREAT examples. Let's just end the discussion here where we can all agree. Tiger belongs in this group: Kobe, Manny, and Ochocinco.

NOT in this group: Arnold Palmer, Peyton Manning, and Larry Bird.
So you're saying Palmer didn't screw around on Winnie?

I've got 10 grand that says otherwise.

Press coverage of athletes' peccadilloes has changed dramatically over the past 40 years. That colors our perspective of said athletes. I'm tired of this putting athletes into one box or the other - good or bad. They don't fit - in either one.

Tiger dominating headlines on a week like the Masters is nothing new.

Quite honestly, it seems as if some the media is being almost apologetic in terms of how much coverage their giving Tiger. I feel like I've heard more about the guys OUTSIDE of the usual 5-10 guys we're used to hearing about simply because of the perception that this weekend is ALL about Tiger.

Catch 22 if ya ask me.

I completely understand why Tiger is in every headline, I just don't agree with it. Tiger is in the headlines for the same reasons that Perez Hilton is "famous" and TMZ makes a shitload of money. America loves controversy. Tiger had a good round, but him being on the cover of every website has less to do with that and much more to do with all the other shit that has been going on. I know, I know to expect otherwise is a bit...no, extremely naive, but I wish the Masters coverage was more about golf and less about Tiger. Hell, I would even settle for an equal balance.

I see what you're saying...but I find it hard to measure the difference between people's interest in Tiger simply because he's Tiger...interest that has less to do with the controversy and more to do with the #1 golfer's return to golf...and people's interest in Tiger because he's recently become the central figure in a national news scandal...interest based upon the entertainment value of a good celebrithrashing.

All things considered, Tiger's never shot in the 60s in the first round at Augusta before Thursday. If he had taken this kind of hiatus from golf for any reason other than his handling of getting caught cheating on his wife and came back to do what he did...I feel like he'd still be hogging the headlines...for purely golf reasons.

Not saying that your point isn't totally valid. It is. Just saying that Tiger's coverage is part of an ongoing media obsession with him. It's just been boosted recently by this scandal. For many casual viewers Golf = Tiger. That's been the case long before November of '09.

After watching almost his whole round...god forbid they show anything else. I bet the sponsors who dropped him are pissed. The "fans" seemed to have no issue with him. They still cheered and got behind him.

Also his second shot on 11, un fucking real. That was sick.

So much to comment on here...where to I begin...

I love Mr Couples. Really great guy. Really wish that injuries hadn't curtailed his career and I really hope he could make a run but.....

...having said that, only 1 of those 2 guys has any real shot at being in contention on Sunday. I think ESPN has picked the one that might have that shot. As others have said above, Tiger > golf at this point.

Meanwhile, it's just crazy that this Woods character can be so incredibly good at this sport that he can shoot a -4 after the past few months. It almost makes sense that a guy this good on the course would be an epic fail off of it. With such singular focus, it just makes sense.
