Tiger Woods (Offical Thread)

I completely understand why Tiger is in every headline, I just don't agree with it. Tiger is in the headlines for the same reasons that Perez Hilton is "famous" and TMZ makes a [censored]load of money. America loves controversy. Tiger had a good round, but him being on the cover of every website has less to do with that and much more to do with all the other [censored] that has been going on. I know, I know to expect otherwise is a bit...no, extremely naive, but I wish the Masters coverage was more about golf and less about Tiger. Hell, I would even settle for an equal balance.

Tiger was front page material even before the controversy, even if he wasn't in the lead. This is standard operating procedure in covering the golf world. Controversy or not he would still be on the front page following that round.

Well, it looks like his private life won't be moving off the front page any time soon after that pathetic advertisement by Nike...

Tiger Woods' new Nike ad, featuring the voice of his late father Earl, may result in her wife, Elin Nordegren, divorcing him.

In the commercial, Earl - who died in 2006 - asks Woods: "I want to find out what your thinking was. Did you learn anything?"

The Swede model, who has been trying to get over the golfer's infidelity, is apparently furious over the advertisement...

[snip]

...Elin, who was not present during her husband's comeback tournament, even avoided watching him on TV.

The friend said: "She's so far beyond hurt now. If she were angry or if she hated him, they might still have a chance to work it out. But she's beyond that. She's numb. She just doesn't care any more.

"She mourned the loss of this marriage, and now she's moving on."

I self-admittedly have never been a Tiger bandwagoner, but never have been a "Tiger hater" either.....until now

"Woods is a big fan of the Canadian rock group [Nickelback], and has joined them on stage in the past."

So, what's your explanation for Wood's fourth-place return at the Masters and missed cut this week?

a) The PGA stepped on him to stop throwing clubs and cursing. He can't play like Tiger unless he throws clubs and curses.

b) It's a carefully designed marketing ploy in a tournament that nobody cares about. Market research after the Masters showed that a large segment of the golf viewing audience thinks his Master's performance showed that he hasn't paid for his indiscretions or changed his behavior. His minders recommended that Tiger throttle back in his first game back in front of a normal audience. Playing lousy, including missing putts a 3-year old should sink, and laughing his way through it is a marketing ploy designed to show people that "Tiger really has changed."

c) Tiger played badly precisely because he was told quietly by the PGA that his behavior is inappropriate and because he found that his support in front of a normal audience actually was quite muted. Listeners remarked that other players got much more supportive responses from the audience. He feels the negativity and its affecting his game.

d) He just had a bad week. Happens to the best of them and he hasn't been playing regularly in tournament play. Next tournament, don't bet against Tiger to be anywhere but the top ten and don't worry about betting on him to win.

I think these four scenarios capture the comments I have seen on the net just now. Which option do you choose?

Personally, I am between c and d. I think the realities of life in the middle of all this may be beginning to affect his legendary concentration and I think he really wants to change. Still, I think he just had an off week and it got so bad that all he could do is laugh it off.

I think he just sucked for two days worth of golf...I don't think he'll be back to dominant form at all this season. Could be for the best as he might learn to really try and fix the sore spot to his game (hitting fairways). That run of 6 straight tourneys he had a few years back was because he hit fairways. When he does that consistently, it takes alot of pressure off of the rest of his game.

Consistency has always been something that Tiger struggled with off the tee...well at least since the first surgery.
