Tiger Woods (Offical Thread)

Tiger Woods accepts special exemption to play in U.S. Open

Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods has accepted a special exemption to play in next month's U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina, the United States Golf Association announced Thursday.

Woods, a three-time U.S. Open winner, last won the event in 2008. While he has lifetime exemptions into the Masters and PGA Championship and can play in The Open until he's 60 as a former winner of those tournaments, Woods' exemption into the U.S. Open ran out in 2023.

It's the first time Woods hasn't qualified for a major championship since the 1996 PGA Championship, when he was still an amateur.

Woods, 48, has captured nine USGA championships -- three straight U.S. Junior Amateurs (1991-1993), three consecutive U.S. Amateurs (1994-96) and U.S. Opens in 2000, 2002 and 2008.

"The story of the U.S. Open could not be written without Tiger Woods," USGA chief championships officer John Bodenhamer said in a statement. "From his 15-stroke victory at Pebble Beach in 2000 to his inspiring win on a broken leg at Torrey Pines in 2008, this championship is simply better when Tiger is in the field, and his accomplishments in the game undoubtedly made this an easy decision for our special exemption committee."

Just sayin': He's earned the exemption. Besides, with the PGA just like all the other professional sports "it's all about the money"; and with Tiger Woods in the field their TV ratings will be higher. Nobody would turn on their TV to see Talor Gooch play.

Winners on Tour should have lifetime exemptions to the tournaments that they win

Coming from the generation that complains about participation trophies, that's funny. Maybe some people think things should be earned.

Which is also the same generation that was actually giving us the stupid participation trophies when we were kids.

Tiger just had yet another back surgery:

Tiger Woods undergoes surgery to relieve back spasms, pain

Tiger Woods had yet another surgery on his lower back Friday morning. This one he hopes will relieve some of the spasms like those he experienced this year.

It was the sixth surgery on his lower back in the past 10 years.

Don't remember who, but read that when Tiger surfaced, his 'reverse C' swing had 'experts' say that would cause back problems later on, so appears they were right. Know he modified it later, but appears damage was done. Personally, glad he didn't break Jack's record(s), and while don't approve of his personal life, he has absolutely been good for golf. He shows up, and an additional 50,000 attendance guaranteed. Sparked many a youngster to play the game, and probably many more of color. One has to remember that golfers don't have to be 6'6" and 275 lbs to be successful, they come in all shapes and sizes. I know many a player that has had to give up the game because of a physical malady, it will probably get me someday, just not today. That being said, do feel sorry for the guy, and wish him health. Oh yeah, the point. Heartily approve of honoring players. The Memorial honors annually, one of the greats. And the Masters, truly enjoy (never shown on TV however), the ceremonial playing of the first hole by some of the greats, as usually their last appearances there. And do approve of a ten year exemption to play in the field, as opposed to a 'lifetime' (life or golf?) exemption.
