Tiger Woods (Offical Thread)

Son of a bitch! He is the best athlete ever when the pressure is on.

The dude is just clutch. Bay Hill is such a challenging course. Hits three bunkers on the back nine at the lip of the bunker, still manages to come out unscathed. Waits for that one moment, the one shot, where O' Hair comes up short and puts it in the water, then jumps on it and puts his pitching wedge about 2 feet from the hole. Clutch putting on the back nine saves him again.

I can deny that it's more pressure packed than a real sport.

you have no idea what you are talking about. in golf the ball isn't moving so its not reactionary. the only thing i can equate it to is shooting a free throw or kicking a field goal with the game on the line. its very hard to make a 15 putt when your hands are shaking.

This is one of those situations where I cannot see the other viewpoint. It makes no sense to me.

Everything has pressure, whether or not it is a real sport is completely irrelevant. Hitting a birdie after rallying from a pretty big deficit against the best players in the world sounds to me like it would be pretty fucking intense. Especially when you're someone that is known by pretty much everyone who owns a TV, and especially when you're going on the front page whether you make or miss this shot. How is there any less pressure in that than hitting a free throw to win a game, etc?

And it being a sport or not being a sport has nothing to do with the amount of pressure. That's a different topic. I'm just trying to understand why you think there is little pressure involved.

its part of the body's reaction to the pressure. it happens to everyone.

Golf is an entirely different animal one it comes to pressure. Since I have played competitively in both I will try to explain. Say you have to convert a 18' jumper at the end of the game, your mind is on the task but also mindful of the guy(s) guarding you, so it is mostly instinctive. Besides you can rationalize that if you should miss the shot, you lost as a team as there were other plays (some by you some by others) that could have cost you the game. You live and die as a team.....

In golf, you are so alone out there. You lose and it is your fault entirely as you have nothing to rationalize and nobody to blame but yourself. Some of the lessor competitors will blame their caddies but ultimately every decision is yours, not a coach, not a ref, but yours and yours alone.....

none of that is going through their heads. Tiger was given a gift, and he worked harder than anybody to make that gift into what he is today. You know what that means? That all he has to do is use his gift to putt a ball into a hole with nobody trying to stop him. In fact, people have to be quiet and not make a noise while he gathers himself and putts whenever he wants. And God forbid if somebody snaps a picture of him during a swing.

You are one of my favorite posters on BP but in this case you have absolutely zero idea of what you are talking about. Your own mind is the worst freaking enemy any athlete can ever have and golf makes you battle the mental demons more than any other sport.

Although to be fair, I didn't have any respect for the difficulty of the game either until I started playing it. When I say playing it I don't mean 4 guys seeing how drunk they can get as they go around a course, I mean trying to be good at it or better yet, playing it at whatever skill level you may posses for money. I can't tell you how many guys I have seen who are normally good golfers just absolutely fall apart as soon as money gets involved.

You are entitled to your own opinion about what is a sport or whatever but your statement that there is no pressure is patently false.
