Tiger Woods (Offical Thread)

none of that is going through their heads. Tiger was given a gift, and he worked harder than anybody to make that gift into what he is today. You know what that means? That all he has to do is use his gift to putt a ball into a hole with nobody trying to stop him. In fact, people have to be quiet and not make a noise while he gathers himself and putts whenever he wants. And God forbid if somebody snaps a picture of him during a swing.

Nobody is stopping the guy when he is trying to make a Free Throw, either but here is the difference. You know for example that the goal is 15' away and that it is 10' off the floor and in today's indoor arenas not outside elements will come into play. You simply execute what you have practiced time and time again.....

In golf a 15' putt might have a multiple outside elements. Is the putt downhill, side hill, or uphill, is the sun setting which may make the putt against the grain, or is it with the grain?? Is it late in the day and the grass has grown a bit so the greens which earlier in the day had been running at 13 on the stimpmeter now are they running at 12 1/2?? Is the creek over there going to make the putt break sharper than normal??? Is the putt with or against the wind???

You probably have not played any tournament golf and you frankly don't get the speed and undulations that the pros face in many of their putts in the typical muni course or even private courses in the area. There are countless decisions to be made before every shot is struck depending on the course conditions....

You are right Tiger has a god given gift but that gift has been honed by years of experience. As to noise you could probably have a cannon go off nearby when Jack Nicklaus was grinding and he would not had noticed.....

For all their god given ability it is the mental state that defines the good golfer from the great golfer....

Son of a bitch! He is the best athlete ever when the pressure is on.

True, True, and True.

I wonder why those (or one) who want to argue whether or not golf is a sport or whether golfers are athletes haven't bothered to throw a name at you that would shoot down your opinion about his performance in the clutch.

It's real simple, because there are no names to name.

Peace, and a Big'Ol :io: to you fourteenand:oh:

I know golf is hard and I now why golf is hard....but don't sit there and give me that BS about team sports athletes rationalizing things in their mind while the game is going on. If you think for one second that Dwayne Wade is thinking, "Eh, if I fuck this up it's OK....it's not entirely on me because this is a team sport," and then to say that somehow has a calming effect....give me a break.

I've posted my thoughts and will leave it at one thing.

"Greatness" can probably be defined in being able to remember and hopefully say and "spell" a great players name correctly.

Tiger, easy.
Dwyane, not so easy. And since you messed up his name, (it's NOT Dwayne) maybe you shouldn't use him as an analogy in the future. And please don't "edit" your post to correct his name, it will only make it worse.

I never meant to imply that one is rationalizing during the competition. If I gave that impression I am sorry, however a lot of athletes do rationalize after the event is over. All I am saying that in golf there is no place to hide.......

Sure there is. If you're Tiger, you blame it on the photographer who took a picture of you.

Ok, I will give you that one. Seriously, is it you don't like golf or don't like Tiger?

I for one am not a big Tiger fan (and I respect one he does) however, I don't believe yet that he is the best ever. He does some remarkable things with a golf ball but I believe his competition is lack as compared with the guys from the 60-70's and perhaps other eras.

Having just typed that it is impossible to compare and contrast different areas based on equipment, the ball, and the course conditions. He is certainly in the higher elevation of talent that is Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, etc....

I can only say this. I watched the UNC game and flipped to Tiger during commercials. Eventually, I stayed up to watch Tiger conclude his round and win.

I had the privilege of seeing Jack Nicklaus stare down a few opponents in person, during his prime.

That guy I saw last night, still not recovered from his surgery, looked very familiar to me...

We've been seeing a lot of articles in our local media saying that Mickelson is ready to assume the mantle of number one. I suspect that Mickelson slept like a baby last night. Slept fifteen minutes, woke up crying, slept fifteen minutes, woke up crying.

I hate Tiger. I'd love golf if I didn't suck at it.
