Things got a little out of control @ OSU last night..

The problem areas these guys are describing are in the Student neighborhoods on the East Side of Campus... the stadium is west of the main campus on the river.

There are a couple more problems at play here to.... one is that the trouble makers aren't always students, there are plenty of not so responsilbe hangers on in the campus area on any given night. Two, "Campus" is a city within a city... and on the edges, especially the South East side are some pretty shady neighborhoods so, it's not just the students and the police are usually pretty scared (and outnumbered as in this situation). Three, the students are transient, so, things like this tend to happen in bunches, then subside for while until a new crop of kids who don't know any better come in. Four, and this is just my IMO, it was a mistake to close the South Campus bars, because now you almost HAVE to drink at home... have block parties and have no bouncers bartenders or any other "rules" between you and the "Law"

Very true on all accounts. This [Mark May] never went down when S. Campus was in full swing. The cops weren't any cooler, but at least you had the bar staff and doormen as a buffer between you and the cops outside waiting to fill up the ever present Black Mariah that they had sitting on Chittenden. That was usually enough for someone's friends to get involved and get him under control before exiting the bar. Also, you have the "friends" from other colleges who treat coming to Columbus for the weekend like Spring Break--all rules of behavior go out the window. I remember during the early 90s riots, there were more arrested students from The Other State Universities than from Ohio State itself.

This is what you get when they closed all the bars. When Mustards, Travel Agency, Mama's were open, kids would get drunk in one place and they could be controled by the cops. As soon as they got shut down kids would have HUGE freeken parties off campus. It's a direct result of them having no place to drink.

I am not a Karen Holbrook basher but it was the dumbest thing ever to try and control kids partying. This is exactly what you get and it is the schools fault. Prohibition didn't work, it doesn't on tOSU campus either. Kids will drink, it's part of the college experience.

My favorite was when they sent a Channel whatever the fuck it was reporter to 15th Avenue and got a live update after a Michigan game.

"Well, no riots here yet!"

Of course not you idiot.. that's fratenity row... they know how to use fences and hire security.

But, seriously, you also have High School kids, local (columbus) non college kids, and generally people just looking for trouble.

Of course, there are those who can make the very plausible argument that Ohio State is full of a buncha [censored]in' amateurs when compared to Sparty riots.

Agreed on the fact that not all of these types of situations are OSU students.People also have to realize that in bigger crowd situations the cops are dramatically outnumbered by shitfaced teenagers/20 year olds. Some having the mob mentally and the fuck the police mentality. While I completely agree if you are an innocent bystander you might get involved in something that really had nothing to do with you,the obnoxious shit faced guy that is causing this scene is the guy to be pissed at. Of course everyone laughs until something dramatic happens with the law.

Alcohol and college is as american as apple pie (cliche' i know),but cops are getting paid to fix that situation. Not to sort out drunks one by one and cater to their feelings.

Damnit... this shit's still happening... i was at a few of these back in the early '00s Chitfest, etc... and to echo everyone's sentiment.. fuckin rookies.. I was at a couple where not only was a couch on fire... some drunk guys took their front door off the hinges to add it to the pile...oh and they took out a street lamp.

I lived on 12th Ave in 2000 my sophomore year...I will never forget ChitFEST!! Crazy shit went down. I felt really bad for the people who parked their cars on the street that night.

One of my fondest memories of freshman year was going to "Ski Club" night at Sloopy's. WOW. I felt so cool, yet I was only 18. Hell Steve Bellisari was working the door!!!!

You should hear the stories about the kids that get arrested for drinking underage on game day. Not kids who were being rowdy and causing trouble..those that are most of the time standing on a porch with a red solo cup of beer in their hand. They spend a good 20-24 hours in lockup where they pretty much get verbally berated for as long as the cops are still entertained by it. Had a female friend of mine, no more then 95 pounds..already scared [Mark May] less over being arrested in the first place, sitting in a cell and listening to their [Mark May] while being forced to hold a cup and a spoon in her hands until she "sobers up" (I saw her and the group getting taken away they weren't that drunk). No action gets taken because nobody buys the stories of a college kid who just got arrested.

Don't feel like Googling it, so, what is the law in this case? Can cops come up to someones porch if they suspect underage drinking? Seems like it should be off limits since it's private property.

I don't feel sorry for them. Didn't one of the dealerships offer to donate new cars to people who were flip & burn victims? I know I drove the biggest piece of shit in the world back then and wanted somebody to fuck it up so I could get a new one. I was pissed when they started banning streetside parking on the weekends.
