Things got a little out of control @ OSU last night..

Wouldn't that be some sort of entrapment? Considering they don't have any uniform visible, or badge, I'm calling bullshit. Don't get me wrong, I believe you, but it's bullshit they can do shit like this.

I'm not sure. I imagine a vast majority of college students aren't in a position to hire legal representation to find out. I know I never was.

It might have something to do with the fact that everyone parties outside on their porches or yards. Maybe that voids your right to not be entrapped or something.

Either way, I was never stupid enough to party outside until I was safely 21, so I could just laugh at what incredible dicks they were being as I showed them my ID.

It's not even exclusive to Ohio State.

I'm 20 years past my time at UNL and I still live in Lincoln, and there's no way I'd stand for bullshit like that being perpetrated on the current students. Columbus has to have a sizable population of former students, right? Those people vote, don't they?

In Lincoln there's a certain percentage of the population that hates/envies UNL and wouldn't lift a finger to help if our students were treated this way. But there are enough of us that could sway elections and would oust the mayor/city council in a heartbeat if they didn't pull the plug on the Chief who allowed his cops to wantonly brutalize the students, drunk though they may be.

Where are your alumni? Why aren't they raising hell over this? You guys are getting the shaft big-time if your alumni are turning a blind eye to this, especially if they went through it themselves.

They require you to have the orange fence up, and someone checking IDs if you're outside. Which baffles me because I believe, someone can correct me, if they have reasonable doubt there's underage drinking inside the fence they can call them out.

I agree with you, but as an alumni, vast majority doesn't care about this type of problem. I lived it, survived it, it's not technically afilliated with OSU since it's offcampus, so the Alumni will never do anything about it.

It's up to the students to start stoping the nonsense. And guess what if they protest or anything against CPD, they'll probably show up and mace them too.

Protecting underage drinking and drunken debauchery isn't exactly a winning political issue, no matter how many former Ohio State students may be voting in a district.

For every outrageous story full of injustice and brutality, some douchebag lights a couch on fire or throws a beer bottle at a police officer, making it incredibly easy to defend their actions I am sure.

Even if everyone is calm and behaved, when they come busting through with riot gear it is almost guaranteed that someone will be drunk enough to do something stupid, thus justifying their actions... at least so far as there is nothing to be done to stop them from continuing to do it.

The students haven't helped their own cause. They have been a nuisance over the years, setting couches/dumpsters/infants on fire for the hell of it. (Maybe not infants.) Rioting. Other sundry drunken, yet neither cheeky nor fun, shenanigans. The areas of off-campus housing look like shit because that is how it's treated.

I read these stories and I tend to side with the police. Why? Because the students, as a whole, haven't done a thing to prove to me they are worthy of the benefit of the doubt.

I remember more than a few "block parties" on Chittenden, 15th , etc. Where around midnight you could see the cops in riot gear lining up at high st to make a sweep east with tear gas and rubber knee-knockers. Everyone would just be having a good time, nothing outrageous going on, then all of a sudden the cops would start their march east and literally cause a riot to start.

I guess things haven't changed much with the CPD and how they handle things.

You're joking.

Not joking at all. This was a pretty regular occurrence when I was living on 13th Ave. 8-10 years ago. It's an absurd show of force - as if they're the National Guard marching on Kent State about to fuck up some longhairs. They weren't using real bullets, but it was the same posture. The parties were big and rowdy, but shit never turned surreal until the cops made their presence known. Then all of a sudden you have beer bottles, empty kegs and burning cars going in one directions and tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets going in the other.

My recollection is that if the cops didn't turn it into a dick measuring contest, most of this outrageous stuff would never take place.

Sounds like I don't want to visit Columbus after all. I'm the kind of tailgater who enjoys his beverages and while I don't raise hell, it doesn't sound like you have to be a hell-raiser to attract the kind of attention I don't want.

The cops in Lincoln aren't like this - not even close. If any of you come to Lincoln this October, expect a little easier time than you (apparently) have at home games.

Question - do you guys know the general demographics of BP? Are most of the folks students, or under 30? The Husker board I frequent seems to have a generally older demographic than BP.

Hang out with the alumni in the tailgating lots on game day and drink your beer out of a plastic cup and you won't have any problems.

The students roam north of Lane and east of High, if you avoid their grazing areas, especially at night, you will be fine.

In my experience tailgating is way different than students partying at their houses/apartments. If you're tailgating with somebody who had done it at Ohio State a few times you'll be fine and know what to keep an eye out for.

Keep your drinks in a red plastic cup, hide your empties and hold your liquor and you'll be fine. In most instances the undercover cops have been pretty obvious to spot.

I wouldn't let the things you've read in this thread keep you away.

Seems like a pretty wide range of ages around here.

Oh, you'll be fine... tailgating is far away from this... totally different thing.

The problem areas these guys are describing are in the Student neighborhoods on the East Side of Campus... the stadium is west of the main campus on the river.

There are a couple more problems at play here to.... one is that the trouble makers aren't always students, there are plenty of not so responsilbe hangers on in the campus area on any given night. Two, "Campus" is a city within a city... and on the edges, especially the South East side are some pretty shady neighborhoods so, it's not just the students and the police are usually pretty scared (and outnumbered as in this situation). Three, the students are transient, so, things like this tend to happen in bunches, then subside for while until a new crop of kids who don't know any better come in. Four, and this is just my IMO, it was a mistake to close the South Campus bars, because now you almost HAVE to drink at home... have block parties and have no bouncers bartenders or any other "rules" between you and the "Law"
