Things got a little out of control @ OSU last night..

I was on the balcony at Ugly Tuna on a Friday night before the Penn State game in 2008. At closing time some drunk asshole Penn State fans were jumping around doing their zombie nation bullshit down in the courtyard area outside of McFaddens. The cops maced those bitches and it was fucking hilarious. I assumed it had something to do with not dispersing fast enough... or something.

What?

I was trying to say that the cops came in and didn't give much warning. Started macing everyone in the area. Not everyone was being out of control (the majority weren't), and a huge ass group of people can't just disappear in a few minutes. It takes time. What that has to do with your story, I'm not sure.

That it's funny when cops mace people under unreasonable circumstances when they are being assholes and you don't like them. Just another side of the righteous indignation coin.

How long were the cops on the scene, and how many attempts did they make to disperse the crowd before they started in with the mace?

Also, did the bottles start flying at the cops before or after the mace was used?

I wasn't there. Based on the people I've talked to about it, the cops just showed up and rolled through like in the videos posted in this thread. I don't know about the bottles and whatnot.

Haha, fair enough. I'd laugh if I watched PSU fans get maced too. :p

What is your plan to deal with a minority in a mob? Mace just hurts. You really expect police to be able to sort out the idiots in the crowd because "most" weren't doing anything?

If you are in that crowd, and you see people acting like idiots towards police, game over and get the hell out. You are about to be maced. Honestly, if you are at a huge party like that, and the cops start rolling in, they are not there to shake your hands. They are not there to hang out. They are there to shut things down. When you see them, go home. It really is that simple.

Damn, when I was in college we had the same stuff. Whenever I saw the cops, I left. I would then get a whiff of mace while I was a few blocks away. It doesn't take a genius.

I agree with JBaney, seems a bit premature to douse kids with pepper spray. Most of them were NOT doing a damn thing wrong. Just because there's a bunch of kids all in once place gives them the right to do that? IMO that's ludicrous. Thank god I don't live on Woodruff anymore, but if I was there and I got hit with pepper spray because of cops doing that for no reason, they'd be hearing from me.

You think the Obetz Warriors need an excuse. Columbus cops have always hated Ohio State students and always will. Cowtown doesn't offer them the opportunity for any substantial graft or corruption a'la NYC or Chicago, so they take out their frustrations by looking to thump some college students' skulls at the slightest (or not) provocation.

That being said, any Ohio State student should know what Columbus cops are all about and get the [censored] out of dodge when they show up.

Oh well, I guess that's a thousand more or so registered voters who aren't going to give two sh!ts when the city and state need to gut the cop wages and pensions.

I agree. I'm now okay with the death penalty for all Ohio State students. :p

Again, a huge fucking crowd can't just disappear in seconds.

People did go home when the cops came. They just couldn't go home magically within seconds like people think they can, somehow. There were thousands of people there. If someone was in the middle of it and was trying to leave they wouldn't have made it before the mace started flying. I don't disagree with people saying people should have left when the cops arrived. I actually agree with it. But that crowd doesn't just vanish into thin air.

It's not that I'm doubting the account of this incident as related to you by your friends, but I find it pretty difficult to believe that the cops showed up, told everyone to leave, then a few seconds later started macing people. Unless you guys have a particularly Eastern European kind of cop over in Columbus, that is likely not what happened.

You have no [censored]ing frame of reference, Donny. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie. Trust me, anyone who's spent any time as an Ohio State student (with some of it on High Street) can believe that Columbus cops could do exactly that. The actual surprise would be if they chose NOT to act prematurely, recklessly and with an almost willful desire to instigate the very riot that they were allegedly sent to quell.

Thump some skulls, make some arrests and maybe ruin some kids' lives with a felony rap. That would make for some great laughs over a few Meisterbrau's back at the cop bar in Obetz.

Then who are the idiots putting up with this kind of police nonsense? If that's really the way these guys act, mace first and ask questions later, then the citizens of Columbus must be the most sheep-like morons in this country. For a college town of (allegedly) intelligent and capable people to put up with a brutal police force like you're describing is inexcusable.

If you want me to believe that Columbus, OH is full of sheep I will, but I had thought better of you than that.

They act that way towards Ohio State students but not the city as a whole. Essentially you have the cops coming from the south side of town (working class, white, Appalachian) put into a position of power over a bunch of kids (upper middle class, suburban etc) that they see as privileged and spoiled. In essence, it's an intense version of the whole town-gown conflict with some nasty socio-economic undertones thrown in.

Most of Columbus (and the city) could care less and just view it as drunk college kids getting their due.

The Columbus PD get their jollies out of [censored]ing with Ohio State students.

You should hear the stories about the kids that get arrested for drinking underage on game day. Not kids who were being rowdy and causing trouble..those that are most of the time standing on a porch with a red solo cup of beer in their hand. They spend a good 20-24 hours in lockup where they pretty much get verbally berated for as long as the cops are still entertained by it. Had a female friend of mine, no more then 95 pounds..already scared [Mark May] less over being arrested in the first place, sitting in a cell and listening to their [Mark May] while being forced to hold a cup and a spoon in her hands until she "sobers up" (I saw her and the group getting taken away they weren't that drunk). No action gets taken because nobody buys the stories of a college kid who just got arrested.
