Things got a little out of control @ OSU last night..

You have no fucking frame of reference, Donny. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie. Trust me, anyone who's spent any time as an Ohio State student (with some of it on High Street) can believe that Columbus cops could do exactly that. The actual surprise would be if they chose NOT to act prematurely, recklessly and with an almost willful desire to instigate the very riot that they were allegedly sent to quell.

For reference (to knapplc), this is the same police force that hires hundreds of undercover police officers to patrol the campus area every game day.

The undercovers carry signs that say "we need beer" wearing Ohio State gear and even paint their faces. If you are nice to them and shout out a friendly "O-H" (and a lot of the time even if you don't) they run (literally, they run like they are little kids going out to recess) into people's front yards to demand ID's.

They are indescribably nasty throughout the whole process and are clearly itching to start fights with people and arrest for disorderly conduct.

This exact scenario happened to myself or my neighbors literally every Saturday in the fall when I lived on 17th Avenue (which is dead center of student housing off of high street).

To cap things off, my mother had her purse stolen from her car in an event completely unrelated to game day and had to go through a touch tone system to file a police report. The CPD spends I don't even know how much money on hundreds of undercover police officers for gamedays, but they can't hire an operator to handle incoming calls. Funny that.

But, they did mace those Penn State fans once, so it is a love hate relationship for me. Also, now that I am no longer a student I don't really care, but there is no doubt that the police are dicks to students. Then again, why wouldn't they be?

Then who are the idiots putting up with this kind of police nonsense? If that's really the way these guys act, mace first and ask questions later, then the citizens of Columbus must be the most sheep-like morons in this country. For a college town of (allegedly) intelligent and capable people to put up with a brutal police force like you're describing is inexcusable.

If you want me to believe that Columbus, OH is full of sheep I will, but I had thought better of you than that.

Unfortunately it's true, they hate OSU students for no reason. Outside of campus, they're great cops, but at OSU it's their goal to screw you over. It's really sad.

Im not sure who said it a page or two back, but most of the time at parties and such, they go smoothly until the cops show up. Then all hell breaks loose

A little off-topic but still amusing to say the least. A few friends and I were sitting on the other side of the tracks, getting ready to go to a Crew game but were waiting on another friend to arrive. I was having a beer (wasn't driving), and 15 minutes after we got there two patrol cars show up. Someone called the fucking cops on us for sitting there for 15 minutes. I couldn't help but laugh at the situation. One cop was laughing with me, the other didn't see the amusement. But I told them, we were getting ready to head over to the stadium, we didn't mean to annoy anyone around the area... But it was 5:00 PM, so cut me a fucking break.

Damn. There's some friction between some of the Luddites in Lincoln and the University, but it's not anything like what you guys are describing. Every college town is going to have a share of people who hate/resent the school, but it sounds like it goes far beyond that over there.

Why don't you guys do something about it? We're not exactly activists here in Lincoln, but I have a hard time believing our students wouldn't raise hell in protests and marches, letters to the local paper - you name it, if this kind of shenanigans were being pulled around here.

It's been a good 20 years since I was in school, and for the most part things were pretty quiet when I was a student, but we had NOTHING like what you're describing. You guys really need to get organized and not put up with that crap.

EDIT - and maybe this is my lack of knowledge of Ohio/Columbus, but I pretty much stereotyped you guys as, in general, being more liberal/open-minded than stuffy old Nebraskans. Is Columbus a pretty conservative town?

Excellent timing..of course my story was referencing my time living at the Party Barn on lane as my avatar would suggest. You can imagine how badly they were itching to get at us. We did our best to block off strangers from coming in and what not but obviously CPD don't care about that. Although in the particular group of people arrested in that story their was a kid that wasn't even from some Arab country that had apparently just been in the country a week when he got taken away with the rest of the underages..have no idea how or why he was there...never saw him again after that

Wouldn't that be some sort of entrapment? Considering they don't have any uniform visible, or badge, I'm calling bullshit. Don't get me wrong, I believe you, but it's bullshit they can do shit like this.

I remember more than a few "block parties" on Chittenden, 15th , etc. Where around midnight you could see the cops in riot gear lining up at high st to make a sweep east with tear gas and rubber knee-knockers. Everyone would just be having a good time, nothing outrageous going on, then all of a sudden the cops would start their march east and literally cause a riot to start.

I guess things haven't changed much with the CPD and how they handle things.

I think this

is the main problem. It's the same reason the drinking age will never be lowered and campus landlords will never repay a security deposit.

You are basically dealing with a roving group of drunk nomads that aren't in one place long enough to organize into anything effective. You deal with it for the three or four years that you are on campus, then you move away, forget about it, and shake your heads at the kids too stupid to get away in time when something goes down.

That might have been him..I don't know..I was fucking plastered when it all went down. Then people were trying to convince me to sell my game ticket to help pay to bail them out..maybe I'm a terrible friend but I certainly wasn't going to do that..it's not like I hadn't just paid to throw the damn party for everyone to begin with. Although given that the game in question was Illinois in 2007...probably would have been better off getting rid of the ticket or possibly even being arrested with the rest of them.

The one thing that DID amuse me is that they were pretty much just filling a quota with the whole situation..literally a hundred people packed into the house/on the porch/on the balconies. 90% are underage and they leave with like 7 people

I used to work a late shift at one of the restaraunts by McD's until 4am. I lived on woodruff, about a 5 minute walk, for two years and I had a couple cruisers "stalk" me on my walk home a few times. I'd see a light being shined on me, turn around and there's a cop staring at me waiting to do something

It's sad because there's a lot of crime in and around the city they could better use their time for. Nope, instead they try and ruin college kids lives.
