Has anyone played the 'new' Scarlet yet? I was in C'bus last week (Mom passed), but didn't have time to play (also thought it might be tacky to take my sticks to a funeral). Did have lunch with wife and daughter in the clubhouse, pretty nice, food decent, pretty co-eds serving, many graybeards there lunching. Looked over the new scorecard and spoke with the Asst Pro. In the 'old days' we had to add 5 strokes to our scores on the Gray to be able to post (Scarlet was that much harder). Now they are saying 7 strokes. Course is longer, and probably has a higher course rating.

Anyone played it yet? Would like to know by a 'practitioner' how the new course differs from the old lay-out. On 16 of the Scarlet, used to take the teeball out over the road, and fade it back around the green. Now, that's impossible because of the tree growth. But with the new equipment, some of the young studs probably take it over the top.....

:gobucks3::gobucks4::banger: Hit 'em long, far, and not too often

the biggest change is the re-routing of the par 5 4th hole. they moved the green about 100 yards to the right just over the lake. besides that, they dug out all of the traps. they are absolute monsters now. even the fairway traps are 5 feet deep. they blew up the green on 16 and re-did the contours. it is still in the same place. i have heard stories about Jack hitting driver there back in the day. not really possible now. when i was there, there were some long guys on the team, but i never saw anyone try to drive the green. maybe it was because coach would have their balls if they tried it though.

here is a cool rundown of the course.

Got to play with my daughter today. We haven't played all summer with her being in Charleston, SC and us being in NC. It was very nice to play and very enjoyable. It does suck that she can blow it by me off the tee box. I do however have the superior short game

it helps when she gets to tee off 80 yards in front of you.

Finished middle of our flight at The Lakes member/guest...didn't play the best gold but had a blast and drank and smoked more than my share over the three days. One thing you can say about The Lakes is that they put on a great event...the staff there is phenomenal. The only downside was the fact that the greens there are in horrible shape...they might not even be salvagable.

I played out at Northstar yesterday. If you haven't been out there I highly recommend it. It is just off 71 north of Polaris mall near Bent Tree. The club is semi-private, so the greens are much faster than your average public course. It is very similar to Cook's Creek (it was designed by Cook as well), but I think it may be a little bit easier. The fairways are a bit wider, and a bad miss doesn't guarantee a lost ball on every hole. Minus two horrible tee shots I hit the ball better than I have in months. Unfortunately the longest putt I made all day was 6 feet. I couldn't get the read correct.

I played up there yesterday too, I didnt notice the greens being too burnt up, but there were several holes where the apron or many of the holes with big slopes up to the green where the sloped edges to the greens were totally burned up. the greens did roll pretty good, but had ball marks all over them that werent repaired very well. I thought the layout was nice, (long if you play it that way 7400+ from the tips and over 7000 from the scarlet tees) a couple very interesting par 5s there too.

Champions is 29 bucks with cart between 11 and 1 during the week. I highly recommend it. That is a great golf course. Tee to green it is as demanding as any golf course in town. You have to be able to work the ball off the tee to play well there. Many holes will force you to hit cuts or draws if you want to hit the fairway. I had my first eagle of the season today. I hit 5 wood from 230 to about 15 feet on the 15th hole and made the putt. Woo Hoo!

Here in Charlotte my club pro told me that two private clubs had to close because of the greens. And Quail Hollow (where the PGA event in Charlotte is held) has lost 12 greens......Ouch!!!

seems like it is way worse in the mid-atlantic. tons of 90+ degree days out there. i would guess a lot of courses will be looking into that new hybrid bermuda grass that is supposed to putt as well as bent.

You also get a $4.00 lunch ticket included but they only serve RC Cola products. I mean who the hell in this day and age doesn't have Coke or Pepsi products?

Also, the main guy there is an arrogant prick and when I was in there about 3 weeks ago, he had bloodshot eyes and reeked of alcohol at 11:30 AM on a Tuesday.

Must have bombed the drive.

That's a ballsy green to go for in two as you almost have to hit a soft-landing draw into the green.

I've had two eagles this summer but have probably played a TON more than you have.

Fighting picking the ball this past week. Not getting a steep enough angle on my irons.

Ha-ha, yeah he was shaking so bad he could hardly separate the white copy from the yellow copy of my receipt!

I was trying to draw it around the corner, but ended up hitting it dead straight off the tee. It rolled about a foot into the rough which actually helped because the ball was sitting up. I took the 5 wood over the tree on the left side of the green because I didn't want to mess with that creek on the right. I didn't see a ball mark, so I'm assuming it landed in the rough short of the green. There was a great deal of luck involved (as there always seems to be when you hit a shot outside of about 220 close).
