The Big Ten Needs to Get Their Act Together

No doubt. Why apologize for the smack talk- it's not like he was wrong, just not PC.

I think I found out why the B1G is having such a hard time. We need to raid the servers at Bristol, CT....

I think a better question would be, "Why is any academic institution paying a coach a seven figure income, an income that dwarfs the income of the president of the school, the deans, department heads and senior professors?"

At least in the case of Ohio State it is an income that comes entirely from the assets of the athletic department.

Every school in the B1G gets $40million per year from the television deals. When people start watching deans and department heads on tv by the millions every week, then you will have an argument.

Old article but still relevant....

Re: Most alumni sustain a large part of their interest in their alma mater’s through following the progress of the school’s men’s basketball and football programs. It binds and unifies alums. I have talked with university presidents who indicate that they feel that 50% of alumni gifts to their schools may be triggered by athletic interest. The gift may be given to the music department rather than athletics, but it is spurred by athletic achievement and the pride it engenders. This giving plays a crucial role in university funding. Revenue also flows from the sale of memorabilia and merchandising with school logos. And clearly, monies generated by successful football and basketball programs can subsidize less profitable men’s and women’s sports that provide valuable experiences for other student athletes.

and

No factor is more important to insuring a winning collegiate sports program than the vision, system, development techniques and coaching provided by its coaches. Nothing is more important to television and other revenue streams for universities than creating a winning and distinctive brand. No achievement by a university stimulates more critical alumni giving than a winning sports program. The decision as to whether operating such a program in pressure-packed Division I sports fits with a universities’ other values and priorities is the prerogative of each institution to make. But if the school makes the decision to compete, no money is better spent than that to secure the most productive coaching staff.

Then why are the endowment funds of Harvard, Yale, Chicago, and a good many other schools without a strong sports following so much larger? If schools say 50% it might mean 50% of the total gifts or might mean that 50% of all those who give do so based on sports. I tend to believe that sports do influence gifting, but I've read more than a few well documented reports that say it isn't so.

Bingo! A great comparison is the University of Minnesota and Alabama. One of these universities has an endowment approaching $3B while the other's just recently crossed the 1/2 billion dollar mark. One of these schools has been a dumpster fire in football for 50 years while the other has been a perennial power. Guess which is which.

As for the 50% mark, that's insane. I can tell you first hand (and I see the fundraising totals broken down every year) that in an average year athletic donations to Ohio State are in the 6-8 percent range. If there is a particularly large donation--like the recent $10M donation--then the number might nudge over 10%. In fact that $10M donation was the first ever 8 figure donation to athletics (barely) while academics gets several each year.

I'd say it's for 3 reasons:

1. Harvard, Yale, Chicago and schools like that are far more established and have been established as a good school much longer than the Pedsters

2. Ped State is what it is - it's now a good school that built its image on a myth with a sports coach. The school didn't get its act together until well into the 20th century, when sports moved to the forefront of the American psyche.

3. Finally, unlike Ped State, those schools you listed aren't in the middle of fuckin nowhere in the mountains of central Pennsylshitholia with nothing but subhuman inbred mutants surrounding them.
