The Big Ten Is Irrelevant - Again

Or, better yet, could you imagine the outrage if a B1G coach called out the SEC last summer ('13) like Stoops did? In fairness to Bob, he backed it up on the field in January, but prior to that his record was spotty at best.
What difference would it make if a B1G coach did so? I mean... one of the knocks on OSU was that they were horrid v. the SEC in bowl games... like oh for 9 or whatever... So, OSU beats an SEC team in a bowl game and frosted tips and fowler go ahead and reward them by dropping the Buckeyes in their final polls.

It's absurd.

There's also the fact (FAX) that while Free Shoes, Cryami and Bama were "proving" deep south dominance in their respective conferences, they didn't have a fucking blood fued every single year with an equal, such as tOSU v Tsun.

Wanna know why tOSU and TSUN didn't win NC's every year? Because two of the top five teams were in the same conf.
I'm pretty sure Miami and FSU had epic battles during much if the time in question. I remember them well.

As much as I hate to say it, the SEC branding themselves as THE football conference has been brilliant. They've created and crafted the story that discounts losses in their own league because it's so hard and doesn't play outside its border even for bowl games.

Think of the top WR from Illinois who went to Mississippi because he wanted to play in the SEC. Top players want to play against top competition and they've done a fantastic job convincing everyone that their league is that way. Look at how A&M and Missouri's recruiting picked up by listening to their coaches. They admitted it was easier to get to a kid to listen than before.

They didn't just brand themselves that way, they went out and won a bunch of championships.

Which obviously prevented the loser from any chance at an NC or conf championship

Well, the problem with Kyle's OSU v. scUM argument is simply that the wrong team won the ones that mattered. 93, 95, 96 in particular. I am just pissed we didn't return the favor in 97. Of course, had we, LJB's argument would be one half an NC stronger. :p

Miami and FSU were not in the same conference, and generally played early in the year.

I remember the 90s even had some all-star type contests that pitted kids from the Florida schools against the rest of the country. There was certainly a Florida bias at the time. Probably the biggest example of Florida bias was letting Florida have a rematch against FSU for the 1996 championship.

In terms of the B1G making their mark nationally, they absolutely blew their chance for this year until the bowl games come around. The only meaningful/marquee non-conference games we have lost and beating up on each other in the conference will be of no real avail. In fact, it can only really get worse at this point...every close game one of our top B1G teams has with a cupcake MAC school will only make it worse. It is really a bummer because the B1G had a good bowl season overall last year and looked ready to redeem themselves. Wisconsin nearly beating LSU was pretty much a draw in my books, but MSU getting handled in the premiere game , scUM getting killed by ND, and OSU being beaten fairly handily at home on ESPN pretty sealed the conferences fate for this season.

And then you have all of the following: Rutgers squeaks one out against Howard. Nebraska almost losing to freaking McNeese State. PSU having a lackluster win over Akron. Illinois pulling one out last minute against WKU. Purdue getting depantsed against Central Michigan. Iowa darn near losing to Ball State. Minnesota struggling against Middle Tennessee State. Northwestern losing to Northern Illinois. Maryland barely pulling it off against USF. I'm struggling to find one silver lining in any of that other than the fact that it may bode well for our record in spite of our conference. Even in my most pessimistic outlook for the B1G this year I envisioned better performances than that. Really the only somewhat impressive win for the conference so far was us over Navy (who I still think will be very good) but that was essentially nullified with the VT performance.
