The Big Ten Is Irrelevant - Again

Seen it on sports center this morning. ESPN mentioned the SEC 11-0 opening day record and then promply said the B1G didnt "fair" well and threw in the BYU and Temple loses.

Did they say anything that was untrue? The B1G didn't do well at all. Temple, Utah, BYU... those are all teams that brand-name B1G teams should beat with ease.

For those who don't watch anymore, the Buckeyes get plenty of love from ESPN. Winning a championship will do that. Where the Buckeyes were lumped in with the rest of the B1G before, they are seen for now as a team apart. The rest of the conference is taking the heat it deserves.

Valid points, but the SEC record is rather inflated too.
For most, this was the first part of their FCS schedule... to be concluded later in November. I mean if beating Iowa in 2014 and Bowling Green in 2015 is what it takes to make the Top-25... we can expect Maryland in there next week, right ? Right?
It's also wrong. I seem to recall WKU beating Vandy. While SCe and Bama beat lesser P5 opponents, the only impressive result was Aggy beating up on ASU.
Temple is embarassing(ly awesome). Utah is a P5 school... and the favorite. BYU came in with a heisman candidate at QB - this is their peak year. After demolishing Texas 41-7... did networks pile on the entire BXII conference? I'm guessing not.

The Big also-rans deserve criticism... just wished it was aimed at those schools instead of trying to lump everyone in the conference together, or make blanket statements about SOS (as if Baylor's schedule is difficult with Texas and OU underperforming)

The problem isn't that M*ch*g*n lost as an underdog in that game. The problem is that they were a 'dog in the first place.

I don't have a problem taking ESPN to task for saying things that aren't factual. If they omitted the Vandy loss that's not a good look. The Buckeyes are the titleholders though, and they will get the benefit of the doubt the rest of this season on that basis alone. I understood making excuses for mediocrity before when those arguments were part of what was needed to get the Buckeyes access to play for a title. That's not the case right now. We can call M*ch*g*n, Penn State and Nebraska's mediocrity what it is.

I don't see why that's a problem. Michigan isn't a headline program anymore for the conference. Others like MSU and Wisconsin have filled that void... the former very well, the latter needs some work.
Is anyone baggin the PAC for sucking b/c CU is god awful? You have to go back to the same time period to find when they were relevant.
Calling scUM and Cult mediocre would be a compliment... they deserve criticism for it. As does Nebraska -- though they were the same 9-win team in the BXII when they came over here.
If the conference is so horrible, why did Nebraska remain just as mediocre to above-average as they were in the BXII?

They are a headline program. They're not living up to it, and that's part of the conference's perception problem.

Why keep comparing B1G's treatment to that of the Big XII or Pac-12? Don't we hold the B1G to a higher standard? Nobody criticizes the other leagues in the same manner because nobody cares. They don't move the needle. The B1G does, and that's a good thing. It's time for the other members to do their part to make sure good things are being said rather than bad.

No, I don't hold the conference to a higher standard in athletics. The West is particularly mediocre, but it seems to me there's an awful lot of parity between those 3 conferences.

I'm a fan of Ohio State, not BigU. I hold Ohio State to a higher standard.

No, they SHOULD be a headline program, but they haven't been performing like a headline program in almost decade, and it is kind of silly that they are still being treated like they are.

True. At this point, the B1G really only has 2 teams of merit. I don't know that this situation presents a problem, but I can understand why folks will prop up other conferences that have a few more challenging opponents.

No, they are a headline program. Just look at all the hype they still get even thought they suck. You are conflating having expectations and actually meeting them.
