Ohio State showed last year that they can make the playoffs DESPITE the Big Ten. And that was after losing to the only somewhat-known football team on their non-conference schedule. I no longer care to root for conference teams to do well, because who cares? Why should we care if Michigan or Penn State is any good? Ohio State gives up 28 to a turnover machine led by Devin Gardner. They need 2 overtimes to beat a team that finished 6-6 in the regular season (Penn State). They're losing to Indiana with 20 minutes to go in the game. They beat Minnesota by only one score. Reward? Playoffs. And by winning the championship, voters will give Ohio State the benefit of the doubt in 2015, so they can do even worse than that and still make the playoffs this year.
They say that there are certain teams that "should" be good for college football, as a whole, to be good: Notre Dame, Florida State, Alabama, USC... the list goes on. Same goes for the Big Ten. Certain teams need to be "elite" for the Big Ten to be "on top": Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska. Ohio State is pulling its weight - maybe even a couple other teams' weight. But Michigan - it took a 5-7 year to fire a coach who won only 15 games the previous two years combined? Nebraska - they might have done something right by firing Pelini. If 9 wins every year is your definition of success, then maybe you should just change your name to "Iowa". Get someone in there who can bring back their glory years. And Penn State - if you lose fans to your own women's volleyball team, then you need to start doing something drastic. I don't know what they need to do, but losing to Temple - getting BLOWN OUT by Temple (that game wasn't as close as 27-10) - maybe you should stop whining about referees and start fielding a competent team.
Anyway, until the Big Ten takes football seriously, I'm not going to take the Big Ten seriously.
