Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

That is a "nice article" but the writer needs to do so research regarding the abilities of the 2007 and 2008 recruits.

Quite true. But those who have watched Wallace and Offutt play will realize how strong these 2 recruiting classes are, if those guys are considered the "question marks". :wink2:

From Gary Parrish's CBS article:

Consider: Ohio State has five borderline Top 100 commitments from the Class of 2007 (three are in the top 65; Eric Wallace is the only question mark) plus five more from the Class of 2008 (four are in the top 45; Walter Offutt is the only question mark).

And now it seems funny to me that those "question mark"-type kids were our "headliners" once upon a time, and kids of their calliber weren't coming along every year.

It's nice to be spoiled. :osu:

Great job, Thad.

Alot of noise regarding the #1 player from 2010 possibly verballing now, DeShaun Thomas. I'm starting to get a little nervous. No where in recruiting history has this type of repeated harvesting of talent occured. I believe Thad Matta is one of the most genuine people and hardest working coaches that I've ever seen. That given how much luck can one guy have? I don't believe that Thad is cheating to get these recruits, but these classes are almost too good to be true. We all know what that means. Someone further reassure my paranoid grumblings about the recruiting process. There has been no indications that anything is remotely wrong but its truly scary that the best players in the country have "all of a sudden" decided tOSU is the greatest place on Earth. Sure I believe it is and many posters on this board believe it too. Is Thad Matta the reason that now all the best basketball players in the country are starting to believe it? I hope so.

That article brings alot to light doesnt it.

I think luck has little to do with it. His personality and work ethic are the main factors(as you mentioned), IMO.

Don't sell tOSU short. Thad has shown he can win and the amount of publicity we got last year was off the charts. The only real knock on the b-ball program is fan support but that is sure to increase given time. Why wouldn't recruits love tOSU?

I agree the University itself has everything a recruit could ask for except maybe the mountains or a beach. Its just sooo amazing the things Matta has already done, and from where we were just 4 years ago and beyond. A perennial top 5 basketball team to go with the perennial top 5 football team? My history and luck will not allow this to go unscathed. I guess I'm always waiting on the other shoe to drop these days.

It is astonishing. Maybe this is just our reward for all the stuff the b-ball program went through under Obie. :)

Maybe a lot of people don't realilze that this isn't just "luck" that Thad can go into Illinois and Indiana and recruit top talent. Those are his roots. He grew up in Illinois and coached in Indiana. He knew Conley and Oden long before he came to OSU. He has strong ties and contacts in both these states. Recruiting is hard work and putting in long hours, it's not magic. He has laid the foundation for many of these recruits by making contacts in both these states. If it's true that DeShawn Thomas has given a verbal, that is a huge addition for the 2010 class. Some think he will be a Greg Oden type of talent, in other words, the #1 player in the country when he is a senior. For those skeptical OSU fans, don't fear Thad's recruiting or ethics, because they are by the book. I know it's going to take some adjustment, but OSU is now going to be entering that rarified air of the Duke's and North Carolinas of the bb world.

Jesus Christ! Or, should I say Thad Matta? This guy is unbelieveable! He gets a commitment from any kid he looks at, and we're not talking about long, dragged out recruitments. Instant commitments! Does this guy even have a scholarship grid to worry about? Thad Matta is officially the "Undisputable Heavyweight Champion of College Basketball Recruitment". Bill Self, Roy Williams, and Coach K have nothing on this guy. NOTHING. I have never seen recruiting results like this. EVER! BAR NONE. Not even K gets commitments this easily. Sure, he has gotten more than his share of blue chippers, but he has to fight for his kids. So does Self. When was the last time that the Almighty Coach K locked down the #1 Player in any given class BEFOFRE THE KID EVEN COMPLETED HIS FRESHMAN YEAR? I do not think that has ever happened. Somewhere, Mike Conley, Sr. is smiling. You know he and Matta are gonna be friends for a long time. Ohio State is going to be a basketball factory until Matta gets bored (if he ever does) and goes to the NBA (if he ever does). AT LEAST HE IS A BIG 10 MAN (no pun intended). So, he is good for our league.

In my mind I see this scenario.... Jim Tressel and Thad Matta are sitting around talking.. they start argueing over who is the better coach.. so being the crafty coach Jim is he challenged Thad to a recruiting battle to see who can bring the most top 100 players in to the program... Thad being very confident in his abilities jumps at the challenge..

Tressel laughs as he thinks he has outsmarted his foe since he can bring in 20 kids a year where Thad will only get 4 or 5.. Thad however isnt gonna go down without a fight, so he just starts recruiting middle schoolers... now that this has gone on for a few years Thad is just playing games with Jim. Everytime that Tressel brings in a new top 100 player (Sweat) That trumps him with the number one freshman in the country, gauranteeing that any hype Jim can stir up is quickly overshadowed by what thad has done..
