Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

I know I'm hijacking the thread, but is it possible that the "Conley doing what Oden does" scenerio is over played?

I mean, at every other level, they were moving to the next level TOGETHER and were going to play on the same team. This time, there is no way that happens. No way will they both end up with The Grizzlies or Celtics. Likewise, if Greg goes, Conley still won't be playing with him, but he'll just be at OSU working on his game. While not realistic, it also applies to a situation in which Mike goes but Greg stays...just some thoughts.

I wouldn't underestimate it as a factor, not just for Conley but for Oden as well. Much was put into Conley's quote before the NC game where he said something like "It wil be hard next year without him." where he assumed Oden was probably gone.

Not that I think they have dillusions that they'll somehow go to the same team as much as if Oden was declaring, then (obviously) he wouldn't be back with Conley at tOSU (& I think that his above quote reflects that it was weighing on MC jr.) . I think that is a factor for Oden as well...if he left for the draft and MC Jr. stayed then it would kind of be like leaving a year together "on the table". But with Conley looking like a top 10 / 15 pick they both have the opportunity to head down the same path "still together", going through the excitement of the draft, sharing the experience of that next stage in their lives together.

I believe they both stay, or both go...I would be very surprised if one returns and one leaves.

You bring up an excellent point with the 'leaving a year together on the table' point.

I really hope they both stay, or that at least MC Jr stays, as I think that we could get by without Greg, obviously, but MC Jr leaving presents Matta and this team with a much greater challenge.

To steer the thread back to it's intended purpose, if MC Jr does leave, how do all here feel Matta will address the relative lack of depth at the PG position? I feel that Butler would definitely start, but who would back him up? Lighty? Turner? Recruit somebody?

Very interesting that you think Conley is more important than Greg to the team next year. Not that I don't necessarily disagree.
Matta's choices for PG are all that you say. Unless he does recruit one he would have to go with what he has obviously. This might be a consideation for a different thread though.

Just wondering on opinions as to whether todays meeting is really going to be moot, and that the players meeting with Coach Matta will be the determining factor in their immediate future plans...Thoughts? Or is it just gonna be about the $$$?
Like pretty much everyone else's, my speculation on this matter is nothing more than groping in the dark, poorly disguised as analysis (aka "gut feeling"). But I think you have to be pretty optimistic to think that any of these guys, with the possible exception of Cook, is coming back. How often does a guy project as a lock for a lottery pick and hold off on pulling the trigger? It happens, but not often. Say all you want about how "Greg Oden is different", but, aside from the fact that virtually no one here truly knows the first thing about Oden's motivating factors, even if he is "different", that doesn't mean he puts minimal weight on the factors that sway almost everyone else in his position. And, probably, Conley's. That doesn't mean that it's only about money, although that's certainly a major part of it. Examples like Redd and Arenas don't show that you should stay in school. They show that you can improve your game perhaps more rapidly by moving to a higher level of competition and training (even if mainly in practice, with some situational play), than by continuing to dominate at a level where you've already established that you are superior to most of the competition.

I can tell you without a doubt that Greg and Mike are making independent decisions in this one -- not that they won"t come to the same decision but they are thinking independently. If they both decide to go, they won't be playing together next year any way -- they each have individual circumstances that they have to consider in their decisions.

Having said that don't you think that Mike and Greg would like to play another year with each other and the only really way that can be done is for them to stay here.

Matta not dwelling on early departures

indeonline

Thad Matta finally sat down with Greg Oden earlier this week and was forced to recruit him all over again.

This time wasn't nearly as successful as the first.

Matta met with Oden, Mike Conley, Jr. and Daequan Cook on Monday night to discuss the future of the trio. When he sat down with Oden, Matta didn't know what to say.

"If they all came back, I think we'd have a chance to have one of the greatest college basketball teams ever," Matta said. "But that's selfish on my part."

Interesting snippet from Lesmires blog on the Spring Game ...

Now, who would be in Thad's sights in the Lone Star State? (And for which year).

Speculation anyone?
G.J. Vilarino

If McKinney High School coach Wes Watson is right, sophomore point guard G.J. Vilarino is going to an accomplished player by the time he signs with Kentucky in two years.

??? lol well you did ask for speculation wow he is 5'9

During an interview with his father, John, at the Jordan All Star game last night, the sideline reporter mentioned that Jai told her he would decide/announce by Friday (I believe his final five was Florida, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Maryland?), to which John responded "that's news to me" so maybe there's still a chance.
