Bob Hunter commentary: Matta's way is right way for OSU recruiting

Word that Jamar Butler was thinking of putting his name in the NBA draft hopper must have caused more than a few tremors at the city's breakfast tables yesterday, especially in homes where the recent departures of Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook already had Ohio State basketball fans questioning their faith in coach Thad Matta's recruiting methods.

...Say all you want about how "Greg Oden is different", but, aside from the fact that virtually no one here truly knows the first thing about Oden's motivating factors, even if he is "different", that doesn't mean he puts minimal weight on the factors that sway almost everyone else in his position. And, probably, Conley's...

I can tell you without a doubt that Greg and Mike are making independent decisions in this one -- not that they won"t come to the same decision but they are thinking independently. If they both decide to go, they won't be playing together next year any way -- they each have individual circumstances that they have to consider in their decisions.
My phrasing there was kind of clumsy, but I wasn't trying to say that I thought Oden would base his decision on Conley's, or vice versa.

Bob Hunter doesn't often exaggerate gratuitously, but I think he is doing so here. It's difficult to imagine that anyone, other than the habitual malcontents, is questioning Matta's recruiting methods.

'Dispatch' Coach of Year, Matta doesn't rest on his past success

dispatch

It's not far from the truth that Thad Matta thinks about Ohio State basketball while sitting over breakfast, sweating it out on a treadmill and even when he's watching favorite comedian Will Ferrell on DVD.

What the Buckeyes coach hasn't done is reflect on the team winning another Big Ten championship and reaching the national championship game.

The rock concert officially ended about five weeks ago.
There will be no encore.
Just a guy with a broom sweeping up the confetti.
And Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta is that janitor.
It's not a bad broom to push.
By the time Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. are sitting in rocking chairs, Matta could be boasting about coaching the greatest big man and one of the best point guards of the new millennium.
Ohio State fans likely won't appreciate what they witnessed until 10 years from now, when both Oden and Conley have Olympic gold medals.
That's fine.

That won't help much next year, mind you, when the Buckeyes will be fortunate to reach the Sweet 16. Jamar Butler is a nice kid and a decent player, but he's not Conley. And Jon Diebler isn't Ron Lewis and Kosta Koufos isn't Oden, for that matter.

I will be disappointed if we do not make it to the Sweet 16 next year. I think this guy is off his rocker.

College coaches struggle with balancing pros, cons of recruits' intent

charlotte.com

Thad Matta has three freshmen -- Greg Oden, Mike Conley and Daequan Cook -- in the draft. Though Oden was considered a lock to spend just one year at Ohio State, Matta said Oden's values and camaraderie with teammates made it easy to decide to recruit him.

Matta acknowledged there might be players entering college whose sole focus is the NBA.

"There's no way we'd recruit a kid like that," Matta said at the Final Four. "But Greg would be the complete opposite of that."

Yes the concert that was this year ended, but the tour that is Buckeye Basketball is taking shape nicely for the next decade and beyond. No, we may never have another Oden & Conley, but Koufos and Mullens won't likely be one-and-done (maybe not even two-and-done). The OSU Basketball program will continue to bring in a level of talent unthinkable to most just a couple of years ago, and the teams we put into the NCAA Tourney will be a fantastic mix of experienced veterans as well as spunky / energizing Freshman & Sophs year after year.

So don't sweep up that confetti just yet...'cause I'm breaking out my Bic Lighter, and I'm ready for more of those Championship tunes!

Actually, I'd be happy as hell with a SS berth next year, but you are indeed spot-on that Jason Lloyd is Off His Rocker. Lloyd is a young guy who got a good gig as Buckeye beat reporter for my local paper (Lake County News Herald) as well as it's sister paper The Lorain Morning Journal. This little prick just stood his ground really firm this year in his belief that the Football Buckeyes had no chance of beating Texas in Austin. Now, he's basically writing off next years basketball season before it even gets close to started, and with no clue of who may actually be on the team. He gives no scenarios of Cook or Conley possibly returning to the team. Although I wish both kids the best, the Pre-Draft camps might be enough to show each that another year of school might be in their best interest. We'll have to wait and see, but I guarantee you that some writer that covers Georgetown has written an article that actually INCLUDES Hibbert and Green in next years plans, at least as a hypothetical. Peace.

"Matta hasn't reached his 40th birthday (he's 39 until July) indicates he probably hasn't even hit his prime."

Let's hope it gets even better.

"Ohio State, as mentioned, has already secured five elite Class of 2008 prospects, meaning the Buckeyes are essentially guaranteed to have the best recruiting class in the Big Ten for the third consecutive year."

Yes!!!.....
