Matta recovering from back surgery, record season
RUSTY MILLER
Associated Press

"The back feels good though," he said with a laugh. "I'm up and around. I've got a cane and I'm hobbling around," he said. "But believe me, this is hard for me because I go so much."

"Somebody said, 'Poor Thad, losing three freshmen in the draft,'" Matta recalled. "I said, 'Hey, we had three guys reach a dream. That, to me, is what we're in this for.' I'd say looking into their eyes and seeing that smile on their faces, that was probably the greatest thing I'll take away from the night of the draft."

"The biggest thing is for us is we have so many unanswered questions," Matta said. "Last year we only had one starter back; we're in exactly the same boat again. There's going to be a lot of teaching, a lot of hard work and we're going to have to jell as a team. That's a good thing - we've got great kids coming in. From that aspect, We're going to be in good shape."

Practices

I talked to a guy the other night who had the opportunity to watch one of Ohio State's practices last year and he said that he could not believe how organized and structured they were. He told me that the practices were even filmed and when you visit the locker rooms there was so much detail on the upcoming opponent it was unbelievable.

Your not being negative JO that's a good point to bring out. That is what makes Matta so good at what he does. (and his teams by the way)

my point was pretty much every college coach. heck i know a hand full of hs coaches who do...
I thought that was your point. I guess that I never realized basketball coaches filmed their practices. TM even has them filmed when they're working with their position coach.

In addition, the person who I talked with was just completely amazed on how organized the practices were. Everyone knew where they were supposed to go when the whistle/horn blew. I have not had the privilege to attend an Ohio State practice but to hear this guy talk, and he does know basketball, he was extremely impressed. He has been to other college practices.

If any of the BP posters have been to an Ohio State practice and inside the locker rooms I would be interested in their insight.

I attended one practice and thought it was very loose (not a lot of work on fundamentals) and the players appeared to be having fun. It struck me that was probably one reason he has great success with recruiting. He was also very much a people person. talking to many who were in attendance. I'm not sure that I would consider it a typical practice, because of the number of spectators.

The ones this gentleman saw was before the first Florida game. All I can say is what he told me. I can't imagine that his practices are very loose and that they do not work on fundamentals much. Don't know which practice you saw at what time during the season.

ive only been to the sat morning fall practices which are glorified scrimmages in the schott. i dont know about all the fundamental stuff, i saw lots of coaching on that stuff, its just not as obvious as what many call fundamentals, you arent going to see jump stop drills up and down the court. the sad thing is kids dont learn the fundamentals till college ball these days...

The NCAA still doesn't get it. Ohio State coach Thad Matta limped around all of July with a protective boot on his foot ? the unintended result of back surgery earlier this off-season. But when Matta wanted to go back to his Las Vegas hotel and elevate his foot, the NCAA decreed another coach on his staff couldn't take his place because it would have violated its rule that only three coaches can be on the recruiting trail at one time during the July recruiting period.
