The Columbus Dispatch

Less than one year after rewarding him with a contract worth an average of $2 million a year, Ohio State decided men's basketball coach Thad Matta is worth even more.

Coming off a season in which he led the Buckeyes to the NCAA championship game, Matta had his compensation package increased by nearly $480,000 a year and the term of his contract extended by one year when the board of trustees approved an addendum to his contract Friday. The raise and other contract enhancements were announced yesterday by the athletic department.
"I believe we have to compensate our coaches consistent with expectations, and our expectation is to win the Big Ten every year and to compete for the national championship," athletic director Gene Smith said before the Buckeyes' football game against Northwestern in Ohio Stadium. "I have shared with Thad that we will always try to keep him at the top of the conference market."

"COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio State gave men's basketball coach Thad Matta a raise of almost $500,000, boosting his salary to just under $2.5 million a year and adding another year to his contract through the 2016 season."

"Matta, 40, expressed satisfaction with the alteration to his contract."

That's a "no brainer". Up my annual pay $ .5M to $2.5M (through 2016) and I'd be satisfied too.

This has far greater significance than another year on his contract or a lot more satisfying pay packet.

Ohio State was in this exact situation with Woody Hayes and Fred Taylor in the early 1960s. The University chose to support football while leaving Coach Taylor with far less than he or his program deserved.

What this tells me, coming after last year's improvement, is that Ohio State has learned from its mistakes back then.

Treating Coach Matta with the respect and resources that he deserves augers well for the building of a sustainable nationally elite program in college basketball.

Well done, Gene Smith and everyone in the University administration who signed off on this one.

Matta adapts to surgeries

Two back operations will limit his active coaching style.

COLUMBUS ? It's not an injured player who is the biggest question mark for the Ohio State basketball team. Everyone's keeping a wary eye on the ailing coach.
Thad Matta, who led the Buckeyes to a 35-4 record and a second-place finish in the NCAA tournament last year, had two major surgeries this past summer for disk problems in his back.

I'm surprised no one has brought up his comments from the sideline interview during the MSU game. Thad spoke how he has been a Buckeye fan since childhood (used to pretend he was Archie Griffin when playing backyard football, his high school fight song being the same as ours). For anyone thinking he'll ever bail for another college job, just keep his interview in mind.

Man, he's only 40...just think where this program is going to be over the next 2-3 decades.

Someone did mention in another thread that he said Don Washington had the best jump shot or something to that extent. In listening to the interview, he also mentioned that Cameron Heyward was a "basketball player". Don't know what that means with regards to the upcoming season.

There's a rumor floating around that this Ted Matta guy is a pretty decent recruiter. Any chance I can get that either confirmed or refuted? :tongue2:

He's another small-time coach from a small-time school. Butler? Xavier? This is as bad as picking up a football coach from Youngstown State. Why can't we get the big names like Knight or Gruden? :nerd:
