COLUMBUS ? For Thad Matta, Kentucky's blue must be too close to Michigan's.
The Ohio State coach interrupted a question Tuesday when he noticed a reporter wearing a Kentucky T-shirt.

"My first question, did you lose a bet today? With the shirt?" Matta asked.
The newspaper guy responded, "I just wanted to remind you that we're looking for a coach."

That was hillarious, and the "Are you an alum from there...I'll use real small words in this answer" should definitely keep Thad from getting an offer from Ky this year.

Thad Matta had lived in the state of Ohio for three years, but there never had been any reason to travel to The Ohio State University. He was a basketball coach, and OSU was a football school. So unless he wanted to check out the latest in sweater-vest fashion, what would be the point?
But the Buckeyes needed a head basketball coach, and Matta was a candidate for the job. No one really knew he was involved -- and he preferred it that way -- but he had to see the place before making up his mind. So he jumped in his car and pointed it straight north on I-71. Arriving in Columbus about 90 minutes later, he threw on a pair of sunglasses and a ballcap as a disguise, as though he were Brad Pitt or Britney Spears. And Matta saw what would be possible at such a place.

As Thad Matta prepares for Saturday's Final Four semifinal vs. Georgetown, the Ohio State coach can relax knowing he's well armed with fatherly advice.

FATHER'S DAY
Thursday, March 29, 2007Story by Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter olumbus
-- The son will reach the peak of his profes sion in his first Final Four this weekend, and the father and former coach who shaped his future on the team bus rides, with the strategy sessions in the family car, will be right there with him.
"It's hard to explain unless you've been in coaching," Jim Matta said of his son, Thad. "It's what you've waited for your whole life."
Coincidentally, as you might have heard, Georgetown coach John Thompson III also comes from something of a coaching family, his father the architect of the Hoyas program that won the 1984 national title.

Matta fulfills destiny with trip to Final Four

By Terry Pluto

Mike Bobinski knew he was watching something special when he saw Thad Matta and the Butler University basketball team walk through the restaurant door.
The athletic director at Xavier, Bobinski was having dinner with friends. His team was in the 2001 NCAA Tournament, in the same bracket as Butler and its rookie head coach, Matta.
``I just remember watching how well-dressed and well-mannered those players from Butler were in the restaurant,'' said Bobinski, a former University of Akron athletic director. ``I didn't know much else about him.

That was just plain funny. From the laughter I felt I was right there laughing with them, cracked me up.

Men's Basketball
Matta the Man of Routine
By John Porentas
You all remember it, the infamous gum incident in which OSU Head Coach Thad Matta invoked the "five second rule" after losing his gum during a game. The gum flew out of his mouth, hit the floor, and Matta had it off the floor and back in his mouth before five seconds ticked by. As they say in basketball, no harm, no foul.
You probably think you know all you need to know about that incident. Well, we're here to tell you we have another detail for you. We know the kind of gum it was. It was Juicy Fruit. We know that because with Thad Matta, it's always Juicy Fruit.

Bob Hunter commentary: Pressure coach puts on himself makes him a winner

Friday, March 30, 2007 3:36 AM
By bob hunter

ATLANTA -- When Thad Matta was asked this week whether he was having fun, he inadvertently launched one of his trademark "Ummms."

"Ummm ? I am," he said. "But I've been too busy to enjoy it."
Ummm ? then that would be a "no," wouldn't it? Matta, the Ohio State men's basketball coach, followed with a story he must have thought would explain his answer.

Dominoes fall right for Matta
BY DUSTIN DOW | [email protected]

ATLANTA ? What if Thad Matta had not walked into the same restaurant where Xavier athletic director Mike Bobinski was dining in Kansas City, March 15, 2001?
Surely by now Matta would have ascended beyond the vista of coaching Butler University in the Horizon League.
But if his timing had not been fortuitous six years ago, there is no telling that Matta would have enjoyed a meteoric rise in his profession that will place him on the sideline coaching the No. 1 team in the land at the Final Four.

High-energy Matta gives Buckeyes jolt

By Marlen Garcia, USA TODAY
ATLANTA ? When practices drag and his team needs an emotional lift, coach Thad Matta is first in line to drill with his Ohio State players.
"It's humorous," senior Ivan Harris says. "He tries to get us going. He got in our three-man weave one day. That's what I like about him. He's a character."
Once while coaching at Xavier, Matta jumped into a pool to motivate a player who was rehabilitating an injury in the water. It's part of his hands-on approach to coaching that helps players identify with the 39-year-old.
Matta, in only his third season with the Buckeyes, will lead Ohio State into an NCAA tournament national semifinal against Georgetown on Saturday night.
"I have a floor burn right now on my knee," the consequence of a rugged practice he was a part of, Matta said last month. "I'm not quite as flexible as I used to be, but I'll still jump in if the guys need a pick-me-up. But they know not to guard me real close or I probably can't get the pass.

Matta's masterpiece: OSU coach turns blank page into winning tale

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - Thad Matta started this basketball season in his office at Ohio State University's Schottenstein Center, holding a sketchy draft of a book that was yet to be written.

Today, Matta sits in an Atlanta hotel room, preparing the final chapter of that book, as the Buckeyes (34-3) ready themselves for tomorrow's semifinal game against Georgetown (30-6) in the NCAA Final Four.

Six months ago, the Ohio State coach could not have known if he were about to write an epic, a thriller, a tale of triumph or a horror story. The unique collection of players he had brought together would determine where the college basketball library would ultimately shelve this manuscript.
