Spring Fundraiser and a New Server (Merged)

$4852 as of the 24th. We have not received any further updates from LongwoodBuck since that time. Doesn't mean there haven't been other contributions, just haven't heard of them yet.

Just thought everyone would be interested to see our growth over the past year. The numbers show the number of unique (different) users on the site for each day. I started from this day last year (April 27, 2004) and continued thru yesterday. Not only has our growth in membership been phenominal, but the actual usage of the site by the members has been astonishing. While we peaked in February around NLOID, the numbers haven't dropped off all that much. In fact, during this off season we are still running larger numbers than we did during the 2004 football season! Now the biggest issue is the number of folks online concurrently, but I think you'll see that the overall usage is up, WAY UP, and this upcoming season will produce waits like we experienced during NLOID on a regular basis.

It's really cool to see our numbers jump so dramatically ... it's also a sobering reminder of the problems facing BuckeyePlanet.

Great stats! Note that the average of the last five days of April last year is 163.2, while the average of the last five days of the report (22-26 Apr 2005) is 739.4, which is 453% higher...and this is with the same server with no upgrades.

This is precisely why we need a new server, and a high-end server at that, now.

The thing that surprised me is that our number of hits didn't seem to drop[ off at all since NLOID. Now the peak hours times on single days were higher back then, but overall hits are about equal between December/Jan & Mar/Apr.

Agreed about the ram. While it would be nice to get as big and fast of a server as possible, we obviously are struggling to raise funds for this server. Why can't we leave out 2 gigs of ram for the time being and then purchase more later in the summer or fall once we have raised more money via the raffle, fall drive?, etc.

Is that the unique users or unique members? If members, that could be partically explained by the fact that people were forced to register around LOI day. Now we have a lot of members that lurk, where as before we had a lot of non-members that lurk.

Please stop taking things like the videos away. Taking stuff away only makes me want to donate less.

We're not "taking them away"...we're curtailing their access until we get enough folks to pony up so we can get a server to handle the exponentially increased traffic. You want the videos back? Then help make sure we can get the server, which will only help every single member have a better site.

Mili - Talked to Clarity or Grad or somebody about this a while back, I can host videos and whatnot where I work if you guys need the extra space/bandwidth. Just drop me a PM if you're interested.

We have enough hosting space and bandwidth for now...

MililaniBuckeye-

I understand what your saying but...

If I was a new user at this site I would take a minute, look through it, and probably leave. Never return probably. Wanna know why? There is nothing distinguishing it from BN or Rivals. Videos certainly did that. I know this site is more civil, better moderated and all that but if we don't have something that immediatley makes us BETTER than BN than what do we have at all? We aren't going to attract new users if we don't distinguish ourselves from the rest and without new users, we have little growth and my point is if new users aren't going to pony up the money then who is? Most of the regulars on this site have donated money. I know you have. I bought a shirt. Your going to need to keep asking the same people for large amounts of money if this site doesn't continue to rapidly expand and gain loyal followers. So please, atleast consider letting someone else host the videos and put them on the board. Its better for the site.

We say we don't want this to be a pay site so instead we take stuff away? Maybe it is time to have a premium section.

I'm not sure CleveBucks. The report that I can see only says unique users. It doesn't list them as members or guests, so I'm not sure if we are looking at only registered members or unregistered lurkers or both. My assumption is that it is both. Clarity is really the one who would need to answer these questions as I only have access to very basic site statistics such as these. I'd love to see the average page load times and percentage of processor usage over time, but I can't. Clarity would be the one to best answer some of the server questions as well. I simply don't have access to some of the technical specs we are running under right now. So I apologize to those who are trying to help us with reducing the cost of the server we need. I (and the others) simply don't have the specifications at our disposal that would allow you to answer some of the questions of NEED versus WANT in a new system. I do know (from browsing the vBulletin site) that every question posed to the vBulletin staff about upgrading a server (for other sites running vBulletin) is invariably answered with RAM first. RAM seems to be the key element to a quick site as far as the vBulletin tech are concerned. I'll poke around some more and see what I find. I believe that Clarity (as the software owner) is the only one who can register and ask questions on their site.

Working from my daily usage numbers, buckiprof did some calculations and just ran some "interesting" numbers (read as "scary") by me in a PM. Hopefully he'll post them here.

I see prof just posted ... ooops. Please put the numbers up here buckiprof. And thanks for extending the anaysis.
