Spring Fundraiser and a New Server (Merged)

Thanks for the info. Dryden. What (as far as you know) is the possibility of the old server becoming a redundant system in case of a catastrophic failure. I know this would be severly underpowered, but would it (I'm guessing) be able to limp us through in the short term?

Well-- here's as good a place to put this as any...

Way back in post #2 of this thread, I said I would contribute, and PM'd Clarity to say I was lying through my teeth... reason being, we wanted to get the thread going and have the regulars set a good example... BUT I didn't have a job, so obviously contributing to the new server was somewhat out of the question at that point.

I'm happy to report that the situation has changed... and I start a new gig Monday... so, I just want everyone to know that "I'm good for it..." though it probably won't be until June... anyway... I had to get that off my chest, because I had felt guilty for saying I was going to pitch in, but not having done so as, yet.

Also- My BP time is likely to get severly cut after today... which makes me sad.. but I'll be around from time to time.

(Please don't hijack this thread with a bunch of "Congrats, AKAK stuff either... not that you would... but... if you were thinking about it... don't :wink2: )

Well, the current server we're using, as I've come to understand it from Clarity, will still be left in AZ and be available. So, since all this software will still be there, if there were an emergency we could quickly switch off the new server back to the old one (old one meaning the one we're using right now). It wouldn't be difficult to mirror the most important things, leaving this server as a complete hot spare. The issue, of course, is processing speed (the whole reason for the new server), so we'd have to address that down the road once there is a ballpark figure for what server load will look like come October/November this year.

The easiest way to speed up the usability of the site on this current underpowered machine would be to cripple some of the non-essential features of vBulletin which prompt a database lookup. Disabling searches outright ... not allowing guests at all ... turning off sigs, avatars ...

For example, disabling avatars, sigs, and rep sitewide would eliminate 3 lookups per post @ 15 posts per page (default) = 45 non-essential lookups eliminated per page view.

EDIT: Forgot about vCash, medals/awards, and member titles .. that's another 45 non-essential lookups eliminated per page view. Do both and you wipe out 90 per view. This alone would cut server load nearly in half. Yeah ... they're nifty features, but we have to draw the line when we're on emergency standby.

Ok, so we have now determined

Redundancy = GOOD

AKAK = BAD

Since I am no authority on building servers to save $$ I will defer all conversation to others. Hell, where I work the unwritten motto is "throw more money at it". It is depressing but...

The old server would be fine if the Hamsters would get some more food. Poor things, they get tired with all that running.

We could spend a little extra as well and upgrade them to Gerbils. Little bit more power, plus the hamsters could be used in other areas.

As far as the fundraisers go. Honestly think we'll be ok just keeping the donation stuff open through paypal and amazon. I will continue to donate $50 here and there when I have it available and dont have anything useless to spend it on. $50 here, $20 there, I never did see what the total cost was for the new machine, with shipping and such. Dry, can you enlighten us on that? or just PM me.

The First Tax Refund Is In

And as promised earlier BP will get a portion of the proceeds.

Well your Spring FundRaiser is officially over but I hope this first installment helps -- be coming in via PayPal. Should be $75, with another $50 after Bob Taft and his boys in the Statehouse get their version of the numbers crunched.

Late fundraiser contribution - and a kind of BP BP (that's a Buckeye Planet Birthday Present).
