In the past two weeks we've caught two very big breaks....

1) first they name a true freshman starting quarterback

and

2) RoJo is out for our game.

What that should immidiately signal to me if I'm Heacock or anyone on the OSU staff is the passing game is going to be pretty basic and no where near the threat of the running game. If we don't come after a freshman QB, and one that's missing a top target I will throw my arms up in frustration. Stop the run and win the game. IT. IS. THAT. SIMPLE.

Damian Williams is the best WR they got, and he's still there. They got several up-and-coming wideouts, including this Butler kid out of GA who's built just like Posey. You also have to believe that if Petey names someone a starter, that player can execute.

Stopping the run is a tall order, especially when lost two of our better tacklers and their entire backfield/OL are returning. We will have to create some turnovers.

I don't think losing RoJo can really be understated like this. I think he's probably our best deep threat, and losing him will shorten the field, and make it easier for the Buckeyes to effectively blitz without getting burned.

Well if the run is the biggest concern, maybe Navy will be a better test than I thought. I know USC doesn't run anything like the triple option and they have much better RB's but our defense should be ready. Now, if Barkley stays composed and the offense is balanced I have some worries. Regardless I'm much more confident this year. Can't wait for Sept. 12th!

you can only tell so much from practice

Ryan Leaf was an excellent practice player in the NFL, we all know what happened when he played live games..........

from reasonable USC fans, I hear he still has the Brett Favre syndrome he had in HS, doesnt know how to take a sack or throw the ball away and ends up making a bad decision

and playing in front of a hostile crowd of 100,000+ on the road against a top 10 team is just a tad tougher than practicing against your own team

I saw him in high school his senior year. He was really a one man show that year. He had a sophomore reciever who is going to be a stud in a few years, but besides that he tried to force a lot of things.

He forced a lot of throws, threw into coverage, and sometimes got a little too hyped up (mentally).

Personally I think he will be in between what USC fans and OSU fans think. He will be able to run their offense and know what is going on. He will be capable of being able to make throws to open recievers. He will not be able to win the game by himself though.

If we play stout defense then he will make his mistakes. If we allow guys to get open or give him time in the pocket he will make the throws necessary to win.

Kid is talented and smart when it comes to understanding a offense. He will be rattled though early on in the game if his senior year proves anything. Who knows maybe he has grown a lot since then, but I don't think he has grown enough to handle a very talented OSU defense in a rocking 'shoe.

Unfortunately, Navy just won't give us the looks we'll need to compare to USC, neither schematically or from a talent standpoint. Any game versus someone with a different colored jesey on is a good test of who you are as a team, but Navy and USC are night and day in terms of the entire game plan.

Although, our new starters on the defensive side of the ball will have to have their tackling fundamentals in check versus Navy, which will be critical come September 12th.

I tend to agree with Psycho on this one. USC lit us up on the ground last time, but it was not due to any special strategy, they just blocked man on man extremely well. Reminded me of what LSU did to us. Defending the trip option puts importance on individual assignments, which is what will contain the USC running game. True, the option is different than what USC runs, but subtracting the threat of a QB keeper is to our advantage, IMO. A frosh QB will not be able to run the entire playbook like we saw last year. If Petey tries to make Barkley run the same plays as last year, Bark's in for a rude awakening. He's never seen a defense close to what we will bring, I don't care how many 5-stars he practices against. If USC's passing playbook is reduced by starting a frosh QB and losing their #1 deep WR, then it makes stopping the run that much easier. I'm not saying it will be a walk in the park, USC has a ton of talent and top notch coaching, but each of these setbacks that they have suffered has played to our strengths.

Comparing his high school team and the one he has around him now is totally different. His senior year Mater Dei was as bad as I had ever seen them, and I grew up in So Cal.

I said in my post that he was basically a one man show on that team besides Victor Blackwell (the WR I was talking about). I will say this though just because he wasnt surrounded by D-1 prospects doesnt mean he should have forced some of the throws he did. He had the Brett Farve problem last year.

I think he will be happy that he is surrounded by talent, but just because he has talent now doesnt mean he is all-world once again. It takes time to lose the gunslinger mentality, and maybe he has but I think when he gets tossed in the 'shoe against the fastest defense he has faced to date I wonder if he will try to force things again.

He threw 4 INT's against Carson and 3 vs Centennial.

And even though that Mater Dei team wasnt that great it was still a very solid team. Going 8-4 in the Trinity league is no small task, and players like Chris Ward/Victor Blackwell are both D1 players. Jaron Hytche, their RB, rushed for over 1,400 yards and 20 TD's last year. It's not like he was Elway on Stanford last year. Mater Dei is never that bare.

You dont throw 18 INT's because of a lack of talent.

I think the kid is going to win a Heisman at USC, but I dont think he is going have a freshman season where he puts the team on his shoulder.

See, my conspiracy theory is true. Tressel scheduled a triple-option offense the week before a pro-style offense because he "knew" (wink, wink) that they would lose one of their stud WR's and be forced to run more...a lot more. Everybody was in an uproar because Navy wouldn't schematically prepare us for SC. But one unfortunate injury later, and OSU's front seven is using the Navy game as a crash course in shedding blocks and form tackling, something they will have to do really well against SC. Cuz let's face it, a freshman QB is not throwing for 300+ yards and 3 TD's against OSU's defense...in the 'Shoe...at night.

gonna be a tough spot for barkley but he's got veterans all around him and an excellent defense to get his back.

we've always had trouble with running qb's and that's probably our biggest concern.
I figure Barkley will be a lot like McCoy of Texas was with that texas team.
Go Bucks:oh:
