So... what's up with the new advertising?

Just one more thing for your info:

Yep, no problem -- that was me leaving out an end quote in the iframe tag. :) All fixed, and I edited my post above to note that if people saw a few moments of exactly what you posted in that screenie, it was just me being bad.

Thanks for the heads up.

Just to reiterate on a new page -- the 300x250 ad (just above) is now in an iframe. That should mean that if an ad is slow to load (as zedo was today) that it should not interfere at all with the page loads.

If you experience any such delays related to this showthread/post ad, please report here.

I don't come over here that much and it usually takes me quite a bit for this site to annoy me:) but today I am experiencing quite a few problems navigating the site. I use Internet Explorer and when I use the back button I keep on getting messages on the bottom of my screen say waiting for "HTTP:/something. That "something" gives me every indication that it is looking for a ad server and then it also wants to download items which I have to wait on. Sometimes they never come and I have to shut down IE. I cannot do screenshots because I can I use the keyboard. In addition, today Norton blocked something that was trying to download to Buckeye Planet from one of the ad sites. I don't know if this will continue or not but I just thought that I should make you aware.

Thanks for the report, Litl. Will definitely look into it, and that's just the sort of behavior we want to avoid/prevent.

Did you notice anything about the download? URL, product, etc?

If anyone else is noticing this sort of behavior, please let me know asap.

Clarity, sometimes I have to wait for a reply from sports-ad and the download message usually just says downloading "items". I am not sure what is going on because this site has hung up my Explorer quit a few times. I would try Fox Fire and I even installed it once a while ago but it just didn't work for me... sorry:(

We'll figure it out. I just don't know what's causing it yet, but Deety and I have tossed around some ideas. When did this start happening for you, and how often is it happening? Does it most/only happen in threads, or also in the forum home and/or display?

The more details you can provide, the better.

I'm having browser crashing problems here today myself, but mine are due to some sort of issue with NoScript (an add-on I run with Firefox). The IE problems seem to be pretty well established, and I just need to figure out if it's something in the forum code, or if it's the ads themselves somehow.

Clarity/Deety, I had to take a minivacation from BP but many of the problems that I was encountering were similar to the ones described in the Browser lockups thread. I will post any future problems in that thread. However, to answer your question regarding lockups, it wasn't that frequent but it would really lock up the browser. Almost the entire machine. I also noticed today that when I went to get into a thread it took a little longer than normal because it was waiting for a reply from a adserver. As I said, I will post any future problems in the appropriate thread. Thanks for all you do. I know this must be very frustrating for you and your coding buddy:wink2:

Glad to hear it's been a while. I'm looking at ways to keep these IE-specific hangups from happening. The file it's loading is actually local here on this server, but it calls the ad code (within the file) from Google.

If you're using IE7 (current), then there's a good chance you won't have these problems when IE8 is released as standard -- but for the time being, I am trying to figure out how to better handle the iframes with IE.

I haven't had any problems since I posted about them and I have IE7

It should be a very rare problem at this point, even with IE7. It shouldn't be happening at all at this point with Firefox or IE8 (can't speak to Chrome or Safari at the moment). And the goal, of course, is that it's never a problem with any of the browsers.

We definitely went through a rough patch with the ads there for a little while. There was a bad ad in the system trying to redirect and/or force a download, there was another bad ad that was causing browser lockups -- particularly for anyone running NoScript! on Firefox, there were a couple pop-ups, there was also a loading issue on our end in regards to how iFrames are handled, and then of course there were foreign language ads as well.

All of that *should* be taken care of now, with the caveat that IE7 may sometimes choke on the iframes load (sportswar-banner.html, sportswar-skyscraper.html, sportswar-300x250.html, etc.). That should be very rare though, and it is still on my radar.

I am very glad to hear things have been better for people. I had a couple very difficult weeks there dealing with all of that stuff.

I know that you are on top of it because that is exactly how the error message reads and I can tell it is trying to call something from Google. It hasn't happened since the last big episode so please don't concern yourself too much with it because it isn't that big of a thing to have to shut down Explorer and bring it back up. I am sure you have bigger things to worry about:biggrin:
