So... what's up with the new advertising?

We load the banners and skyscrapers within iframes, which is to say that even if they don't load, it shouldn't be slowing the rest of the pages down.

Are there specific pages/urls (showthread.php, etc.) on which this is happening? Is it every load, or just some? How much of the page loads before it breaks?

I'm trying to think of what we have that's pulled from sportswar.com, and I'm drawing a blank. Doesn't mean there isn't anything, but it's just not coming immediately to mind. Our ads are pulled through Google.

Anyway, give us a little more info as you can, and we'll try to figure it out. When did this all start?

Not sure what has happened recently, but IE is freezing up with some regularity for me when I move from a thread to the one above it. It seems that a "banner" wants to load, then refuses to load.

I'm running IE under Vista Home Premium. (I think it's IE7.)
When you say moving to the thread above, do you mean with the < Previous Thread | Next Thread > controls?

Also, need a bit more on "freezing." Is that taking a long time, page never loading, partial page load, or timeout error?

I've had some minor issues with the banners loading. Nothing major, they just take awhile sometimes. The page usually loads all the way, but it takes longer than it should.

It says something like "loading banner/sportswar...etc"

It hasn't been a "problem", just a minor annoyance. That's why I didn't say anything 'till now. I use IE7 as well.

Is it sportswar-banner.html that's loading? sportswar-banner.html and sportswar-skyscraper.html are two documents that are loaded into the iframes. Basically, the ads are on little dedicated pages of their own, and those pages are loaded into the forum independently of the rest of the page. What that allows (at least in Firefox, I'm starting to wonder about MSIE) is for the forum/site to load even if the ads can't. We ran into a problem some time ago where one of the myriad advertising hosts was down, and because the banners would time out, so too would BP itself. The discussion about it all is probably earlier in this very thread. Anyway, the iframes solution was in response to that. If indeed that's what is slowing MSIE down for some folks, maybe I need to figure out if there's a 'better' way to handle it.

Deety has also pointed out that Google Analytics can sometimes be slow to load. Down at the footer, we have little snippets of code that allow Google and Big-Boards.com to take basic traffic measurements. There may be a better place to put them, and/or perhaps there's a better way to load them.

As much detail as possible about the slow/no loads would be helpful. Specifics are mentioned above by both myself and Deety, but really, describe even details that seem mundane. When there are problems like this, first we have to determine how widespread (is it one person, a few, everyone using browser X or OS Y, everyone?), then we have to narrow down the possibilities (which of the several dozen templates on a given page might have bad code, which of the several dozen external data pulls thanks to the ads might be causing a problem, etc.).

MSIE isn't as sharp as it used to be, or perhaps it's just that Firefox is more forgiving when it comes to things cobbled together by, well, me. Either way, with enough information, I'm sure we can figure it out.

This is what happens...though I'm thinking maybe it's an IE problem and not an ad problem...I have no clue.

Sorry I didn't do better with the precision thing.

When I move up, I go to the little blue folder line (right next to "Welcome, MaxBuck") and go to the next level up -- that is, just to the right of the ">" symbol in the folder hierarchy. That's so I get a full picture of what threads have had new posts since I last visited.

By "freezing" I mean IE just stops working. I have to go to Task Manager and shut it down, as it fails to respond otherwise.

Good info, guys. Buckyle's pic matches one I had - looks as though the ad is trying to load between the top stuff and the post template. Clarity - plugin load order, maybe?

MaxBuck - that's helpful. I never use that section for navigation and would not have thought of it. Still not sure how to fix it, but this should help.

Something I noticed a few months ago but forgot to mention until I remembered today.

When I signed up for Gamefly, I saw the link under the gaming forum. I was like "I'll use this link, maybe BP will get a nickle or something for my signing up, it will be epic, and the BP Mods will realize how awesome I am and how valuable my contributions are"

So I clicked the link: http://friends.gamefly.com/r/40836f7c4351102a919d

came up to page not found.

Now you'll never realize how awesome I am :sad2:

The 300x250 box ad in the text ad spot is a temporary measure while we sort out the problems with the showthread skyscrapers. Of course, if we decide (collectively) that somehow those are less obtrusive, then we can just keep them instead, but initial reaction when I first asked was that the skyscrapers would be less obnoxious that these -- so that's still the goal.

Either way, like anything else, this is all a work in progress, so please bear (or bare, if you desire that sort of exposure) with us.

And OCB, we knew you and OCBW were awesome even without Gamefly -- but thanks for letting me know that link was dead.

Do these only appear once per page? If so, I think they'd be less obtrusive, imo. Most of the time I am reading the last couple of posts in a thread and can scroll past the ads (or be directed past them entirely by clicking the 'last post' arrow).

I agree completely. Imo, the side...skyscraper ads (is that what the side ones are?) make the page ugly. That's just my opinion tho, and I'll deal with whatever.
