San Francisco 49ers (official thread)

Hyde is averaging 3.2 yards a carry. Not used to that.
It's a function of how they're using him. The run blocking this year has not been up to snuff, and Hyde is running into giant masses of humanity almost every carry. At this point, Gore is getting the lion's share of carries against more open fronts, and that's understandable given he's the proven vet who has never been much of a fumbler. Hyde's time will come. Possibly in the next few weeks if they start resting Gore more to keep him fresh-ish for the post season. He has broken off some really nice runs when put in the right situation.

I realize the OL is down from last season but it just seems like they block effectively enough when Gore is in...then Hyde comes in and can barely get the handoff before getting hit.

I think it's the situations. When Hyde is in, it's generally in an obvious running situation, and opponents are loading up the box. I don't know what has happened to Greg Roman. From 2011-12, he was an outstanding play caller. They ran a lot of unusual sets, and mixed things up nicely. In the last two years, they've moved away from that. There are still spurts where they throw the opposition off balance, but not nearly as regularly. They're practically a "Tressel-ball" team this season. And given the weapons available, that's very frustrating at times. Of course it may be a function of the spotty line play they've had this year.

The Seahawks trading Harvin is extremely interesting. From a strict value sense, I don't think he's a good guy to have on a team b/c he's expensive, fragile, a pain in the ass and somewhat of a gimmick player. So I can see why the Seachickens would want to trade him in theory. But it also sounds like they are eating a pretty big chunk of money to move him, and that offense is definitely a lot less scary without him on it. I'm excited that he won't be on the field if we play them in Seattle in the playoffs.

Fuck it, this ain't worth staying up for. One thing's for certain, if this team doesn't get healthy, it's gonna be a stretch to even make the playoffs. Hard to live up to lofty expectations when multiple All Pros and several other starters are out for long stretches. Especially against this schedule.

As I'm typing that out, Kap marches the down the field for a TD. Doesn't matter, though. That shell of a Niner defense ain't stopping Peyton tonight.

As an aside, more Stevie Johnson, less Crabtree from here on out, please.
