Rutgers Scarlet Knights (official troll of PedSU)

The verbal and physical training techniques I experienced in boot camp (and even more so at SERE) were calculated to elicit specific responses by DIs who were in complete control of themselves. Similarly virtually all of the screaming & hands on I've seen or experienced in athletics were also primarily for show (ie Woody & his 'prepared' hats) and/or to prove a motivational point.

The video of Mike Rice contains none of that. It shows an individual who has lost control of his emotions and doing nothing that furthers his job of teaching young men.

There is no correlation between Rice's actions at Rutgers and what occurs during military basic training.

Very true. That said, basketball isn't basic training. And shouldn't be.

Many of the disciplines needed in the miltary (focus, teamwork, dedication) apply to any sport at any level. These "kids" are fricking adults, and some need a little more adjusting than others. As one of the threads in the Open Forum is entitled, "The pussification of America continues".

So... The guy is trying his best to be Bobby Knight.
Except instead of coming off like a old-school hardass
Coach that still cares for his players, he comes across like a
Typical hot headed douchebag.

Coach or no coach, lucky he hasn't been knocked the fuck
Out by one of his own players yet.

You ever hurl a ball at my head full speed and call me a "faggot"
In practice and that's exactly what you'd get too.

I see, so throwing a ball at a player is an effective tool in what you describe above?

Depends on the situation...if the kid is fucking around and not giving 100%, get his attention. JFC. Some of you would've been totally fucked had you been born 20-30 years earlier...

I was in college in the 80s. I'm plenty old enough.

No, throwing a ball at a player isn't an effective learning tool. I can get with the "rough" handling and getting players into position, but throwing the ball, no. That's just a coach that is not in control of his emotion. When that happens, you get fired.

While I may not be of your hay-day "we walked 20 miles to school
Uphill each way" line of thinking. THIS particular type of "coaching"
Has no place in athletics at any level.

I've been told to pull my head out of my ass and think.
I've been slapped upside the helmet with a clipboard ( though not hard).
I got the point everytime and did better. But coach was also a good man.
Saw him at church. He spoke with our families. Made sure our grades were
Well and when my grandmother passed away my sophomore year, he was
At the calling hours.

This, however is verbal and physical abuse by a man that doesn't have his mind right. Nothing less. You berate, insult and physically intimidate young adults?... GTFO with that 'toughen up' message you're
Trying to spew. Because as much as i agree with the pussification of America sentiment and it bothers me....this isn't that.

Yeah, throwing objects at someone's head (or body in general) is far from "discipline." I still think inbounds plays in basketball need some rules, which this reminded me of, but that's a different topic. Its one thing to pass a ball hard to a player who is in a position to receive it even if they aren't expecting it, its a completely different thing to just chuck a ball at your player out of anger and then berate them with things having nothing to do with the game or practice.

Most people today would call that abusive also. At least you can somewhat relate to what I'm saying.

I'll admit I haven't seen the whole tape, but unless this guy is flat our assaulting people then I don't see much call for the amount of total outrage this is generating. Also, the only thing we're seeing here is a covert tape provided by a disgrunted fired employee. This guy might also be a great guy off the court, but we're not being provided that...

It's shock radio, but it's asinine that I'm listening to Scott Ferrall on CBS Sports Radio and he says that the Big Ten should rethink the invitation for Rutgers.

I think we're way too far along for that to happen.

But it's probably just shock radio. I sometimes miss the cursing from Ferrall (recalling his SiriusXM show).

And this is learned by having an out of control, lunatic launch a basketball at your head exactly how?

I had coaches who would blow the whistle, freeze play and come over and aggressively and physically put you into the right stance and/or position. all the while why loudly explaining to everyone within earshot what a stupid f@ck you were. Was it physical? Absolutely. Was it humiliating? Absolutely. Was it abuse? Absolutely not. Did one learn to not make the same stupid mistake a second time? Abso-f$cking-lutely.

There's a world of difference between that and what I saw on the video. What I saw on the video is a shitty coach and shitty leader freaking out with no underlying reason and abusing his players for god knows what reason.

Rice walked up to one of his players and kicked him in the ribs. For what? Not leveling a teammate during a drill on a screen?

This coach isn't old school. He is batshit fucking insane. Surprised Pernetti hasn't been fired already for burying this when the video was handed to him last summer.
