Rose Bowl possibilities

This is correct. And it is also correct for Iowa. They would win the same tiebreakers against PSU, Wisky, and Ohio State if they beat Ohio State and lose their last game to Minnesota.

Both teams are in the same boat.

For as cloudy and uncertain who the Pac-10 Champ in the Rose Bowl will be, the Big Ten Champ in the Rose Bowl is clear...

Ohio State or Iowa...whoever wins Saturday.
woh woh hold on...
The Buckeyes could lose their next two games and then watch Iowa or Penn State go to the Rose Bowl....

don't count those chickens yet. I live up in tsun and watched the Tigers lead their division all year long and then blow a 7game lead with 20 games to go...

I hope the players watch the Purdue game two more times - this week and next.
It's not over yet. Man up! Go Buckeyes!

Ummm...incorrect. Penn State CAN NOT go to the Rose Bowl.

Ohio State or Iowa...the winner of next weeks game goes. Neither team needs to do anything else but win next week. Penn State had to win today to stay in it. Sucks for them...haha.

Seeing OSU players celebrating with Roses in the 'Shoe would be a nice sight. And strangely, one we haven't seen in awhile. Hopefully we can lock this up against Iowa, then get to wait for this Pac-10 stuff to work itself out until we get an opponent.

Although we saw them celebrate with Roses 2 years ago in Michigan and turns out we played for the title game... :)

Where do you think OSU plays?...Detroit....They blow everything up there.

Here are the Pac Ten rules for breaking a tie to determine the automatic qualifying BCS (Rose) Bowl bid.

2-team tie: Head-to-head

3-team tie: Record among head-to head teams (and they all play each other). If the 3 teams all beat each other, they look at who beat the 4th-place team(s), and eliminate a team that has a poorer record against the 4th-place teams, and then go to the head-to-head for the other two. If they all beat the 4th place team, or all went 1-1 against two teams tied for 4th, then they do the same thing against the next rung in the standings, until they get a difference. If they all beat the same teams, the team that has gone the longest without an automatic Conference Rose/BCS-CG Bowl would get the bid.

Pac.Ten.Tie.Break.Rules

Oregon and Arizona are the only teams with 1 conference loss, and they have yet to play, so if either team wins out no tiebreaker is involved. If the winner of that matchup loses another game, 2-way and 3-way ties are possible. 2-way ties are easily understood, so I will look at the various scenarios for 3 teams with 2 conference losses. I'll ignore the scenario where every team has at least 3 conference losses, but that's a possibility.

3 teams currently have 2 conference losses. Here are the top 5 teams, their losses, wins against the other teams in the top-5, and remaining Pac Ten games.

Oregon - USC(W), Stanford(L), still hosts ASU, plays at Ariz and hosts Oreg St
Arizona - Oregon St(W), Stanford(W), Wash(L), still plays at Cal, hosts Oregon, at Ariz St, and at USC
USC - Wash(L) Oregon(L), Oreg St(W), still hosts Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona
Stanford - Oreg St(L), Arizona(L), Oregon(W), still plays at USC, hosts Cal
Oreg St - Ariz(L), Stan(W), USC(L), still hosts Wash, plays at Wash St and at Oregon

3-way tie among 2-loss teams (tie-break winner bolded)

Oregon-Ariz-USC (USC would have a better record over Stan/Oreg St)
Oregon-Ariz-Stan (either head-to-head, or wins over USC and Oreg St)
Oregon-Ariz-Oreg St (Ariz will have wins over USC and Stanford)

Oregon-USC-Oreg St (USC would have a better record over Ariz/Stan)
Oregon-Stan-Oreg St (based on head-to-head)

Ariz-USC-Oreg St (USC would have beaten them both)
Ariz-Stan-Oreg St (based on head-to-head)

Ariz-USC-Stanford is not possible with 2 losses, since USC plays Stanford)
Oregon-USC-Stanford is not possible with 2 losses, since USC plays Stanford)
Oreg St-USC-Stanford is not possible with 2 losses, since USC plays Stanford)

4-way tie among 2-loss teams
[strike] A 4-way tie with 2 losses is not possible, too many teams play each other. [/strike]
If Stanford wins out, Oregon State wins out, Oregon beats Arizona, and Arizona beats Cal, ASU, and USC there will be a 4-way tie.

Arizona (beat Oregon State and Stanford, lost to Oregon and Washington)
Oregon State (beat Oregon and Stanford, lost to Arizona and USC)
Stanford (beat Oregon, lost to Arizona and Oregon State)
Oregon (beat Arizona, lost to Stanford and Oregon State)

Arizona would win the tiebreaker because of head-to-head over Oregon State after Stanford and Oregon drop out.

So Oregon better win their last 2 games, because the only tie-breaker they are likely to win is a head-to-head against USC.

From what I looked at there are only 3 to 4 head to head games that will fully determine the Pac-10 team.

Barring unforseen upsets. Or like some say...chalk(Ariz over Cal, Oreg over ASU)

If Stanford wins on Saturday USC is out. If USC wins Stanford is out.(3rd loss for either with not enough to win tie breakers)

Oregon vs Arizona would then likely knock out the loser (Arizona would have to win one more conference game to have tie breaker over Oreg and a USC loss to win outright.(already beat Stanford and Oreg St))(Oreg would have tiebreaker and Ariz would need a 3rd team to enter(but I think it would still be out of reach))

Oregon vs Oregon State(Oregon State needs alot of help(win out, USC loss and 2 Ariz losses) but if Oregon beats Arizona then USC plays Arizona only one loss is needed with their win out.

Then USC vs Arizona. USC would need an additional Oregon loss if they won out to this game then would hold tiebreakers against every other team in the hunt.

Only Oregon and Arizona hold their own destiny. Stanford needs to win out and have Arizona lose twice(Oreg and USC most likely) We will have almost a full understanding of the teams still in the hunt on 11/22, both in the Big Ten obviously , and in the Pac 10 which teams are left.

They also need Oregon to lose at least one more time.

Great work BB73, only a small quibble.

I think Arizona wins the tiebreaker because of head-to-head over Oregon State after Stanford and Oregon drop out.

That brings up an interesting hypothetical question... Well all know the Bucks will win out :wink2:, but if the Buckeyes have to lose one of the remaining games which would you rather it be? Go to the Rose Bowl, but actually lose to Michigan (wow, I don't know what that even feels like), or miss out on the Rose Bowl and beat Michigan for the 6th time in a row?
