No, I've never been to a game at Michigan Stadium. But I'd never expect it to be a great game day experience. Everyone who I know who has been to Michigan Stadium says the fans aren't too passionate. When I was talking about it being a great stadium, I was just talking about how it looks from the inside, the nice, smooth shape of the bowl, with no decks -- and the sheer size of it, it is the largest stadium in the Midwest, if not the U.S.

As for Notre Dame Stadium, I have been to a game there. And the fans weren't too passionate there either (and the women were not that attractive). But I still think ND has a great stadium.

But back to Michigan, you have to admit that this is beautiful:

It's no wonder that of all the stadium in the world, Notre Dame choose to copy Michigan Stadium when building their own:

Meh. I see that everytime I take a leak.

I don't think there's anything beautiful about it. It's big, and round. Meh. Different story once the renovations are complete.

Photos of Michigan Stadium are taken inside, or of the gate. How many people take photos of the outside of the stadium? It's quite bland. It took me awhile just to find this pic on flickr:

When I think of great stadiums, I think of atmosphere, architecture and unique traditions. UM has team tradition, but the stadium is pretty mundane in those categories... besides pioneering 'big' long before it's time. Note: Their uniforms sicken me a bit, but I can acknowledge how tremendous they are in terms of design & unique tradition.

If round bowls are your cup of tea, I think USC has a lot more character:

How does Michigan Stadium compare to this type of architecture?

Or this?

Or this? (Kyle Field is nothing if not intimidating, if only from a disturbing standpoint). The stadium and fans are wildly odd, but truly unique.

Even this has some serious character...

I guess to me the fans play too big of a role in the stadium. There are a million gorgeous pro stadiums out there, with varying levels of tradition, but they are just large collections of metal without tremendous fans.

Another example... the Orange Bowl is chock-full of history. But the fans are so lousy that I have never had any desire to attend a game there.

As such, do we need a pretty stadium thread?

I mean... Miami has a piece of junk in a bad neighborhood that they're gonna implode... but... they have somehow managed to play some good football in the past.

Does it come to mind when thinking of great stadiums?

Imploding reminds me of UCF who has 'The Trampoline' for an upper deck, which the students enjoy with glee.

No, it certainly doesn't come to mind... nor does the UCF stadium... I was just trying to make your point that the fans make the environment... and... this is a "rivalry" thread... I mean... its even more amazing to me that an LSU fan would post pics of Mich/ND's stadium to support the idea that's part of the rivalry... great tradition in programs make great "games." But a game isn't a rivalry... not even a collection of great games is a rivalry... the stadium is a pretty small factor.... face it... if Ohio State played Michigan in a back field over by West Campus... we'd be trying to fit our lawn chairs around it days in advance.

Wow. That is UGLY. I would kill myself if we replaced Tiger Stadium with a stadium that looks that ugly that from the outside.

Well it is the Orange Bowl. But yeah, it is pretty ugly and it is in a bad neighborhood. The city decided to destroy it and replace it with a new baseball stadium (the 'Canes played their last game there this season). Now Miami is going to have to play at the Dolphin's stadium, which is like 15 miles from the U of M, instead of just 5 miles like the Orange Bowl used to be. Either way, it would suck being a student at a school with no stadium on campus, like USC or Miami.

I grew up out west in Nevada. All of my family. on both sides, had been on the west coast since the 1920s or before, so I had no family ties to the Great Lakes region. Ohio State-Michigan was THE college football rivalry when I was growing up for me and my friends. We used to gather at someone's house and watch it every year at 9am. The only other rivalries that came close, in our consciousness, were USC-ND and USC-UCLA. The only SEC rivalry that we were even aware of was Alabama-Auburn, and I don't have any recollection of ever bothering to watch it.

Sorry, Ohio State-Michigan has a national presence that no SEC rivalry has.

The SEC does not have a rivalry on the level of Michigan vs. Ohio State. There is no team in the SEC whose fan based is obsessed with only one single other team like Ohio State is with Michigan.

Yeah I've seen both the Horseshoe and The Big Hole in person and I went to the UM-SDSU game back in 2004, which was Mike Hart's breakout game. It was very uninspiring. They do a lot of clapping at Michigan. I do wanna see a game at OSU because I have know lots of people that go there who tell me good things.
I'm not gonna sit here and tell you about how amazing SEC stadiums are, but the truth is, we have a lot of night games in the south and night games are more electric than day games. I wish the big 10 would play more night games, especially OSU because I remember the OSU-Texas game being pretty rowdy.
There are some stadiums that don't have the lights but I've seen games that ended late in the night that started in the day and it is a completely different atmosphere. At LSU most of the games start at 7:30 or 8PM with a couple day games that are on CBS.

Puts on his BB73 mask ...
Pop quiz - which pairing of SEC teams is the longest running annual contest?
