The SEC does not have a rivalry on the level of Michigan vs. Ohio State. There is no team in the SEC whose fan based is obsessed with only one single other team like Ohio State is with Michigan.

The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is pretty nasty rivalry and only going to get better after this year...

Mississippi. WTF? I thought you guys said Auburn was the big rival.

LSU doesn't have a rivalry that begins to compare with the Ohio State - Michigan rivalry.

There are six teams we play every year (Florida, Auburn, Ole Miss, Alabama, Arkansas, Miss State). Here's how long we've been playing each of those teams each and every single year:

Miss State since 1944
Ole Miss since 1945
Alabama since 1964.
Florida since 1971.
Auburn since 1992
Arkansas since 1992.

And here are the total games in history we have played against those six teams:

98 -- vs. Miss State
91 -- vs. Ole Miss
69 -- vs. Bama
54 -- vs. Florida
52 -- vs. Arkansas
40 -- vs. Auburn

If you went to a Tiger football discussion board, and posted a thread on who is LSU's biggest rival, some would say Ole Miss, some Alabama, some Auburn and some Florida. No one says Miss State, and very few say Arkansas (unfortunately because the Arkansas game is usually pretty intense). Although Tennessee and Georgia are games that we get just as fired up for as our regular rivals, the only reason we don't consider them rivals is because we don't play them every year (we play them on a rotating schedule with teams in the SEC East -- this year we had South Carolina and Kentucky from the East).

In recent history, our fans have stormed the field and ripped the goal posts down three times -- against Florida (1997), against Alabama (2000), and against Tennessee (2000).

I was in Tennessee this weekend, and I ended up getting in a conversation about rivalries in the SEC. I asked what the Top 5 SEC rivalries were. A few obvious ones were thrown around. Tennessee - Alabama, Florida - Georgia, Auburn - Alabama. Near the end of the conversation, a fellow BP poster asked about Auburn - LSU.

It was shot down immediately.

I rest my case.

It may be a big in-conference game, but it isn't a rivalry. tOSU - PSU is a big in-conference game. tOSU - Wisky is a big in-conference game. That doesn't make those matchups rivalries.

I agree w/ LSU-Auburn not being considered a rivalry. To have a rivalry, both sides must consider it their biggest game of the year. LSU will always play 2nd fiddle to Alabama when it comes to the Auburn game, and vice-versa when we play Alabama. Florida has Florida St. and Georgia, and while the games with them are certainly big for LSU, I wouldn't consider the Gators a rivalry game either. Arkansas is just a "media-made" rivalry, w/ no real passion behind it (although this game is starting to become pretty good lately).

That leaves Ole Piss, which at one time was truly our rival. If you ask any old-timer, this will undoubtedly be their answer to this question. The two fan bases truly hated each other. But as the years have passed, and the LSU beatings continue to mount, the luster has worn off for Tiger fans. I'm not so sure that it has for Ole Miss fans, as I witnessed during my first trip to Oxford this year, but it definitely has for the Tiger faithful.

So I would say that LSU has no real rival, just a few games of importance that get the fans really excited. Which isn't so bad if you ask me. I'd much rather be excited about an 11-2 LSU team playing for a NC than being upset at an 11-1 OSU team playing a NC that lost to Michigan.(hypothetically)

Yes, Ole Miss takes their rivalry with us very seriously. I hate playing them. They are an upset waiting to happen every single year. I've been to Oxford as well, and yeah, I was shocked at how jacked they get for their game against us. I did like all the "Go to HELLLLLLLLLL, LSU!!!" crys that fill the air. I think that's a pretty cool tradition. Check out this pic of some guy in Oxford's house...

Those statements demonstrate that slu's attempt to equate LSU-Auburn or LSU-Ole Miss to OSU-UM couldn't be more incorrect. Ask any sports fan in the country who is OSU's biggest rival, and they will surely come up with only one answer.
