 Votto on first with BP batting, I got up to put my lunch dishes away. 10 seconds later I come back to watch Rolen ground out to end the inning.

He actually took the first pitch.

WORST #4 HITTER EVER Dusty, he just can't fucking do it you moron!!

Nice to finally get a W. I'll take a 1-2 stand to start out the year against the St.Louis Pujols'.

and what does that tell you about how far they have to go to simply contend for the NL Central?

The gap between a healthy Cards team and this band of limp dicks is massive.

They better be able to hit Carlos Silva. I guess I can give a pass for making Brad Penny look like Cy Young (just barely). Yet if they can't hit Silva I may be looking for a different hobby earlier than usual this year.

That's no shit.

Silva has a career BA against (BAA) of .302, a career WHIP of 1.41 a career line drive % over 20 and an amazing career contact rate of 88.5%. He doesn't strike out many and last year he walked more than he K'd.

Now that said, his 2008 and 2009 BABIP and LOB% in Seattle say his horrid numbers may have been slightly unlucky and he's due for a (minor) rebound, especially moving to the NL. The other thing is to ask ourselves why the guy is still in the bigs if he sucks that bad? Its because he is a groundball inducing MF'er. 48% GB rate for his career to be exact.

He's one of those guys that will give you an opportunity for a big inning almost everyone of the 5 or 6 he pitches but if you don't get that key 2 out hit he'll wiggle off the hook with DP's and grounders.

Long winded way of saying the same thing as Scott. They should do some damage with this guy but given the Reds aversion to 2 out hits, DP tendencies and the overall punch-n-judy/hacktastic nature of the majority of our lineup don't be surprised if they get 7 or 8 hits off him and only score 2-3 runs.

They should win this game with Bailey vs Silva but get your hopes up for these fucktards at your peril.

I think they need to make a statement by winning the Cubs series at home to establish the tone as a contender.
Hell with contending, right now I'd just settle for establishing a tone as being consistently better than the fucking Cubs.

I know about five different guys that I've grown up with since elementary school that are all lifelong Cubs fans despite the fact all of them were born and raised in Central Ohio and have no familial or educational ties to the city of Chicago.

WGN brainwashed all my friends in the 80s and shit, apparently.

:slappy:

That's pretty funny, TBS did the same thing when I was a younger man with the Braves when they first started getting good, since I wasn't near any major markets (which probably dates me a bit).

I think for both the Reds and the Indians the first 2 weeks of the season are more critical that normal, because they need to get off to good starts to build some confidence in their clubs. I think the Reds can do some damage against the Cubs.

It wasn't just your friends.

I have never quite understood the dynamic involved with being a bandwagon fan of a team that never won shit but it obviously exists.

The other irritating paradox with Cub's fans is the arrogance and "rivalry" with the Cards. I have always operated under the assumption you have to win to have arrogant fans and that you have to beat a team and cost them something dear to have a real rivalry. When the fuck have the Cubs ever broken any fans hearts beside their own?

All in all I think its fitting that such a large percentage of Cubs fans are also ND fans. When you think about it the only real difference is ND was actually good back in the day, other than that the maddeningly unjustified arrogance, delusions of self importance and far flung bandwagon nature of their fan bases is almost identical.

Or in other words, this:
