Reds tidbits (2010 season)

They better be able to hit Carlos Silva. I guess I can give a pass for making Brad Penny look like Cy Young (just barely). Yet if they can't hit Silva I may be looking for a different hobby earlier than usual this year.

You might want to start the hobby search.

This season is going to get away from these guys quick. They can't hit, the pitching, defense and pen are all vastly over rated and the manager is a fucking retard which results in a team that is completely inept in the mental parts of the game.

All the new management has done is change the way in which the ass clowns in uniform lose not stop the ass clowns in uniform from losing. Instead of that hopeless feeling of knowing they could never get an out, we get the hopeless feeling of knowing they can't get a hit.

10-8 losses are no different to me than 3-1, it just makes the games go by faster.

These guys are losers to the bone, nothings changed. I was an idiot for ever thinking it could.

The amazing thing is it's a simple concept. Be patient. That is what happened in the 8th. Even Thom knows it, and if he can pick up on it a blind, mentally handicapped deaf man can. Just work the pitch count some. Is it really that tough?

Right now it's a smoke a mirrors 2-2. If you can't hit Silva and Penny in back to back games how can you hit real pitching? Of course they did drill Silva on occasion, but the Cubs D was stellar. Thankfully the Cubs have possibly the worst bullpen in the league, and the major reason they are going nowhere. Yet the hitting is going to be an issue if this continues, especially Bruce. He has not been good, and when he does make contact he is so predictable the D is right in position. I know people claim he has bad luck, but it's becoming obvious he only hits certain pitches, and when he does it's to the same spot. That is why he leads the league in being "unlucky." If you rarely get a hit on line drives it stops being unlucky and the simple fact every time you hit a line drive it's to the same exact spot. Hey Jay, every team has a chart on that. Go with the pitch.

Anyway, the starting pitching has been decent. Hopefully the bullpen tightens up some, and the hitters actually learn that working a count is a good thing. There is talent on this team. Sadly they are lead by one of the worst managers in baseball. Maybe they will win in spite on all that, but seeing the start of the season I am less hopeful than when I started. I guess I made the mistake of thinking the team was in somewhat capable hands. I forgot it's Dusty and his band of idiots with 1899 baseball philosophy.

Won't happen with Dusty or this ownership/management group. That's an organizational thing that needs to be taught from the GM down to the lowest level of the farm system. It surely isn't going to change mid-season.

No it is not but to be fair even Billy Beane gave up on teaching it. I think the prevailing logic is a guy either has OBP skills or he does not, draft accordingly.

The problem is, as you stated, the manager has zero comprehension of this and in fact encourages the hacktastic approach. I mean no one is making up the base clogging comments, the moron actually said that shit. That should be a pretty good indicator of the teams pending hitting approach when you employ a manager who thinks getting on base is somehow a bad thing.

What strikes me funny as shit is all the people complaining for years that the Reds were too reliant on the HR/struck out too much/beer league softball type stuff and think this team is any different. The approach is the same, they still only score when they hit HR's but the guys they have now can't hit them with the same frequency.

I'm also laughing my ass off at the love fest for Francisco. I heard Thom and cowboy both going on and on about his power and that it was ok he struck out so much because his power was so special. Francisco has about half the on base skills that the former left fielder we shall not name had yet that guy was the fucking anti Christ for striking out so much.

Francisco is also a goddamn butcher in the field so I guess he must really hustle out to his position between innings because other than the fact the former left fielder who shall remain nameless took walks and got on base I don't see any difference.

I dunno maybe they are just waiting until he plays everyday to realize he isn't a short talentless white guy who hustles all the time and then they'll turn on him.

In the meantime this offense sucks ass and will continue to suck ass. Votto is the only legit threat, you simply pitch around him and take your chances with an old and power drained Rolen after the obligatory 2 pitches to Phillips. Once Rolen goes on the DL the offense goes from suck to blow.

Bruce looks to me like Austin Kearns light even after the shoulder injury. Good glove in RF, occasional pop when he gets a mistake pitch, BB adverse and K prone. Nothing even resembling the middle of the order MVP caliber hitter projections we had hoped for and need.

Some of the pitching depth/talent is going to have to be turned into bats or the future isn't near as bright as we had hoped.
