RB Maurice Wells (Official Thread)

Mo Wells is a hidden gem that needs to get involved in this offense. I was really hoping to see it in the NC game.

He may not be lightning fast but he is football fast. Get him out in the open and this kid will turn alot of heads. Hell, Archie Griffin wasn't "real fast" but does anyone recall ever seeing him get run down from behind?

The thing about Archie is that he had massive thighs and THE BEST BALANCE of any RB I've ever seen. As a result he was able to break ALOT of tackles and bounce off of defenders.

Simply the best!!

But back to M. Wells, he is still maturing as a person and player. Hopefully this coming year will be his breakout year.

Here's hoping....

I hope for the best with Maurice Wells and his football career at Ohio State. The sad thing is that Mo probably could have really benefited by being redshirted. With a redshirt he'd still have 3 years of eligibility left including an entire 5th year senior season where Beanie would probably be out of the picture (assuming Beanie is a 3 and out guy). Now he has 2 more years and Beanie will be here the whole time. That doesn't have to be a bad thing though.

I still can remember all of the Wells x2 , Thunder & Lightning comparisons from the not too distant past. I agree with previous posters that calling the same type of plays for Mo that you call when Beanie is in the game is probably not the best possible utilization of this player. Sometimes that might be what the game calls for but damn, throw Mo Wells a bone once in awhile and maybe he can get some positive momentum and confidence and get his career on track!

That's what it comes down to apparently. It's up to the staff to figure out a niche for this young man. I think they will. Also I find myself, as a fan, compelled to root just a little bit harder for Mo Wells than I normally would for a single player. He is a football player and he wants to get on the field and play football. He could have thrown in the towel and walked away to get the playing time somewhere else but he's going to stick it out and try harder. He's going to stand by the Buckeyes. You gotta respect that. Good luck Maurice!

If he doesnt have the speed, then why would he be on the roster, because he doesnt seem to have much of anything else. I actually think he is very quick and can make things happen in the open field, but I do not like seeing him run between the tackles, he is just way too small and goes down on the first contact almost everytime.

Just want to say that I'm also glad MoWells is gonna stick around. I've honestly been worried about this since the scUM game when it became apparent (to a national TV audience) that CWells is a stud who can run with power AND speed. I still remember how excited I was when we got the commit from MoWells. I just hope the staff will give him the touches he deserves (if he works hard in practice and stuff, of course).

Personally, I'd like to see him motion out of the backfield and run some quick slants and bubble screens. He's no Teddy, but I think if he has some space and a good block or two, he can make some things happen.

Good luck next season Maurice!!! Work hard this spring!!!

I got this from another board, and I liked it. Start in the I formation with Beanie at FB and either Wells or Saine at the RB spot. Then go in motion and move the RB out to the slot and send Beanie back to the RB spot.

Is this a legal shift?

I'd love to see that kind of play-calling with Maurice. As an audible "option", that could work great.
ie: Call a run play for Beanie up the middle, if the QB doesn't like the defense setup, he can motion Mo out and get some mismatches and/or force the defense to realign. I think this is the exact kind of play-calling we could use with Boeckman and Maurice on the field.
I also think Mo could be an excellent "secret weapon" against Wiscy or Michigan. Line him up all year as a receiver out of the backfield, then come the big games let him loose on some runs outside or a reverse.

I really hope Mo has a great year, because I really want to see him do well. I have not been particularly impressed with him so far, but then the players around him kind of set the bar high  .

He is actually the first guy i noticed when i started following recruiting a few years ago.

Unless you went to his highschool games, I don't think anyone on this board has seen the kid at full speed.

i have one better for you, i actually played on the team with im his sophmore and junior year... he came in after the 5th game of the season( once our other RB transferred to Mandarin High School) and he rushed for 998 yards in 6 games and of course everyone knows the crazy numbers he put up as a junior year. He is crazy fast once he past the first wave of defenders or when he bounces it outside...

In this update from Spring Practice, Barton mentions the staff has been studying WITH the New Orleans Saints, and have come to really like how they use Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush there. Next year could be the year we finally see what Maurice can do in the open field.

Sounds great! I'm sure the coaches have both M. Wells and B. Saine in mind for the Reggie Bush role.
