RB Lydell Ross (official thread)

I have nothing to add about Ross, its all been said many times. I will however break from my normal respectful thrashing of the guy and actually make a small defense for him.

I saw 21 touch on it a few pages back and I can't believe this doesn't get more attention but our FB's(namely Schnittker) are far more below average for their position than Ross is at his. This is year 3 of watching Schnitt get routinely blown up by LB's on the Iso play's, he's not getting any better.

Your not going to have Jamar Martin every year but a talent upgrade at the FB position is sorely needed imo.

I agree, which makes me wonder why Stan White isn't seeing more action here.

I have always been a Lydell supporter but....

after watching yesterday's display of - no not running the ball - pass blocking I find it difficult to defend him anymore. There were blitz packages I noticed that Lydell, as a SR, should be able to pick up. However, he continued to double team...DOUBLE TEAM either the DE or the tackle allowing the blitzer to pass by. Why does this sort of thing happen with a SR at running back? It was a poor display to say the least. I hate to see that. I really like Lydell as a person and have been pulling for him, but he doesn't give me much to pull for him.

Good point, there should be no discussions on this board about what players did well and who didn't, what things you'd like to see in the future, who you would like to see get more PT, etc. We won the game, Coach Tressel is(insert record here) and is beyond reproach, end of story.

Somebody had some extra sarcasm for breakfast:biggrin:

Good point, the scores and records shouldn't be up for discussion either.

When were they discussed? They were just listed.

Here's where;

I just see a lot of, "We need to do X [where X = some ingenious alternative that Jim Tressel seems to have overlooked]." Meanwhile, we won handily on the road against a very capable opponent. I have no problem whatsoever with Ross. He's no Eddie George. He's no Maurice Clarett. But it seems relatively clear to me that with the team we have, we don't need him to be. According to ESPN (not sure where this 1.8 YPC thing came from) he had 25 carries for 51 yards and a TD. That puts him - for the year - at 66 carries for 282 yards (4.27 per) and two TDs. I couldn't give less of a shit about what kind of stats our players end up with, but for the record, he's on pace for just over 1000 yards and 7 TDs. *shrug* I don't see the problem. Quite frankly, and maybe this is being run through in a different thread already, if we need to point fingers at someone over why the offense seemed mediocre at best today, some guy wearing #12 kept throwing passes behind, over the heads and at the feet of all his receivers.

Bottom line (for me) is this: Us - 22 Them - 14 Tressel can play whoever he damn well pleases. I just want the W. Sure, I think Pittman should see a few more carries. I suppose if I were the coach of a division 1-A juggernaut like Ohio State, I might do things a bit differently. Something tells me, though, that I wouldn't be 38-7 (or whatever his record is).

And now to address one of his points;

To throw your own logic back at you, Zwick had some bad throws, but he threw no interceptions and was only on his 3rd start at this level. We won the game against a tough blah blah, and he did what he needed to for us to win. Yadda yadda. Basically, like Ross, he had a pretty poor game -- but unlike Ross, he's not a Senior and didn't turn the ball over.

The bottom line is our entire offense struggled against a very quick and solid defense. Hopefully we continue to improve in all phases.

My caveat here is that I remain a big fan of Lydell's, and continue to believe that had the timing of his fumble been different, that he wouldn't stand out as a weak point much more than the FBs, OL, QB, etc.

Ok I guess since I just got back I will throw my two cents in too.

Tressel is incredibly loyal to Sr's but when does loyalty to an individual become more important than loyalty to the team?

Everyone always recites the record and the fact that we are getting wins, but to do that means you have become complacent. We as a team , we do not seem to be improving much if at all in these wins. Dont you think a NC caliber team should start seeing some marked improvement from game to game, and that includes a better running game from Lydell "a feather in the wind" Ross?

Yes Pittman did get his carries against a tired and beat NCSU defense, but its that same defense that caused Ross to fumble a few plays later. Speaking of fumbles this is the 3rd straight game that Ross has fumbled, one ended up not counting because of a penalty, and the other two very well could have cost OSU the game.

People earlier in the thread were pointing out that maybe Pittman doesnt have the blocking assignments down for the pass plays, well after watching the game yesterday I am CERTAIN that Ross doesnt have a clue either. On one specific play that I remember, Zwick dropped back to pass and Ross was in the hole staring right at the blitzing linebacker and then Ross decides to slide over and help out the Tackle on the DE , who the tackle was doing a great job against. Leaving the backer to run free and absolutely crush Zwick.

Plus the next time I see Ross get a hand off and go straight towards the line of scrimmage towards where the hole is supposed to be, and then look for a cutback will be the first time. He gets the hand off, seems to dance before he even tries to make any positive move towards the line of scrimmage. Earlier in this thread it was said that he moved the pile on his touchdown. He did that on 2 plays the ENTIRE game, the fact that he doesnt do that on every single play says something to me. It says he just doesnt have the determination to be a feature back at OSU. He has absolutely no leg drive, and the fact that a defender can glare at him funny and he goes down just adds fuel to the fire.

This is just my opinion but I would like to see Pittman start the NW game coming out of the bye week. I think he should get the first 10 carries or so against a fresh defense. Then depending on how the momentum is, subsitute Lydell for a series and give him a shot, to see if he can have a fire lit under his ass and to see if he can hold onto the ball. Then I think they should go in at halftime and see how things look and determine if you are going to come out and run Pittman, or possibly Hall, or Haw if Ross is still up to being a below average RB.

its too bad that this has to be happening to ross.....of anyone on the team, i was hoping he would step it up and have an all-american year....

i would like to see ross get 10-15 carries a game, pittman 10-12 and up to ten or so for haw.....

Some of you are mentioning Pittman's runs vs. a tired Pack defense.
This had nothing to do with it. I think what most of us saw to convince us that Pittman should be playing a lot more was a back that is simply quicker and more aggresive.
He's so much quicker out of the gate and it makes a difference.
