TAMPA - Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex for about an hour this morning, dousing the blaze before anyone was injured. Damage was estimated at about $25,000, authorities said.
Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said the 10:17 a.m. alarm came in from the Newport Square apartments on Himes Avenue just north of Hillsborough Avenue.
Seven engine companies responded and found smoke pouring out of the roof over Apartment D at 5650 Louis XIV Court, Wade said.
Fire damage was contained to just one apartment. The building had about a dozen other units in the building, Wade said.
A Tampa Fire Marshal's Office investigator said that the tenant, Jacqueline Davis, 21, left for work at 7 a.m., leaving an out-of-town visitor, Jennette Henry, asleep in the back room.
Henry said she awoke to neighbors beating on the apartment's door because of smoke coming from the roof. She said the bedroom door was closed and that there was no smoke in the room but that when she opened the door the hall was filling with smoke. She left the building uninjured.
Investigators said an electrical problem sparked the fire within the walls near the air handler closet.
The American Red Cross is helping find Davis and the three others sharing the apartment find temporary shelter.
A total of 42 firefighters and paramedics responded to the alarm, Wade said.

?It?s going to be a great game. Both teams are very talented and neither better underestimate the other,? said Ross, who will be on OSU?s sideline Saturday. ?I feel [the rematch] was a long time coming. It is one of those games you?ve had marked on the calendar. It?s a game everybody wants to see. And everybody?s going to be tuned in.?

Ross says he hasn?t really watched a replay of the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Occasionally, when it?s shown on ESPN Classic, he?ll watch some of it, but ?not much.?

What does he think about people claiming the Buckeyes stole the 2002 national title, their first in 32 years?

?Everyone has their own opinion, and I can understand that coming from a Miami fan,? Ross said. ?If that?s what they want to think, they can take it to the grave with them. I?m a realist. I understand with a controversial call, there?s going to be mixed reviews. But it is what it is.

?Personally, I think [Chris] Gamble was mauled,? Ross continued. ?You have to watch the play real closely. A lot of people don?t want to do that. A lot of people just want to say it was a blown call.?

***[By the way, I went back and watched the play several times today and disagree with Ross]

Even though the 2002 Buckeyes will forever have their title, Saturday?s rematch is important to them, too, if for nothing else than to prove OSU can beat UM without the benefit of a call ? even if it is seven years later.

?If we beat them again, it?ll definitely shut people up,? Ross said. ?And if we do it again next year down in Miami, I don?t want to ever hear about that call again.?
