RB Lydell Ross (official thread)

He's just not a very good running back. I never understood why people thought he was going to be the shit this year. A poor man's Derek Combs.

I agree he doesn't have it as a good running back. He has no vision to see the hole when there is one. He dances around instead because he lacks the vision to find and hit the hole. The O-line has made holes for him and he fails to see them. :(

...and/or he can not break a tackle. He's had some good opportunities to break off some nice runs but gets "shoe-string" tackled or can't beat someone one-on-one. Sometimes it seems like he just accepts that he is going to be tackled.

Watching Clarett today on ESPN classic just showed what kind of a back we need at Ohio State. He was hitting holes, and making himself small to slip right through the holes. He made a lot of people miss with nice moves. Does Ross have any moves?

The plays that are really defining Ross's year so far have been the fumbles. He had to know that Tressel was not trying to pick up the first down on the 3rd and 10, he was just getting to the Nuge down (4th). With that in mind, he down not secure the ball like he should have and it gets stripped very easily. Those are the kind of things that kills me about Ross. I don't care that he is not getting 4.5 ypc or 125 ypg. But his entire career seem to be filled with "freshman" mistakes. Fumbles, missed blitze pick-ups, running out of bounds while we are running out the clock, ect. . . Those are the kinds of things I really hoped he could get rid of this year. He has not yet and that is the reason I think we need to see more of ANY other RB. He still got damn near every carry on Saturday.

Hmmmm....

Let's see... in the spring I got laughed off a thread at BN for saying that I'd be a much happier man if I knew going into the season that we had a tailback as good as Mike Wiley. And today, that's still true. (Someone had made the arguement that Wiley was our worst Tailback since... X)

Anyway, 3 games into the season we don't know much more about our overall running back situation than we did at the start... except maybe that nothing much has changed.

Just to note quickly... I think Lydell is a great kid too and I wnated him to "Jon Wells" hi senior year too... but if the past is the best indicator of the future, Tressel can't count on this kid to turn it around without somehting changing.

As far as this Loyalty to Seniors stuff... you also have to remember that Tress is accountable to the team for who he plays. You can't expect the OL to block for the 4th best back, just because he's a senior. Its also not getting John Hollins on the field a ahead of TG2.

One problem we face is that our best FB is dinged and his back up can't take on a an LB.

Another is playcalling (IMO) what happened to running on the perimeter? We did it week one, and then it just kind of died. I imagine that NCSU's Linebackers were fast and would have pursued well... but come on... move them around a little... at least find out if they can run you down.

I tend to think that during this off week, Pittman and Haw are going to get a lot of work... I think Ross knows he's in the Dog House if only for that fumble. He and Pitcock aren't going to have a fun film session.

Changes have to be made... and the first one is to see what Pittman's got in some meaningful series...

Unfortunately, if only to the idea of moving forward... Lydell is going to Torch Northwestern... Uggh.

When I started this thread on Saturday, I didnt expect it to get that many replies, but I think we all have an opinion about Lydell Ross and his lack of production, especially in big games.....

His lack of speed to get to the outside, his lack of burst through the hole and absolutely no vision at times, frustrates me to no end!

66 rushes, 282 yards and 2 TDs in two games, if he stays on this pace, he will reach 1,100 + yards when you include the bowl game. Is that enough for OSU to win the Big Ten, who knows, but my problem with his performance has always been that in the big games when we need a few yards, he rarely delivers and I don't want to hear about the O line play, thats a part of it, but in my opinion of the first three games, the O line play has been improving and the holes are there, its just that Ross is unable to reach the holes for positive yards.

Its time to give Pittman and Joe, along with Ross split carries, I hope Coach T makes a change.

I saw at least three plays where Schnittker was laid out flat and the LB made the play in the backfield. That is unacceptable

Good thing I read most of the thread before I responded. I've never seen a fullback get straight up PANCAKED that many times. So, so sad.

Those stats are totally misleading. No way is he a 4.3 ypc runner. In all fairness, he got stuffed a couple times yesterday because Shitgear either whiffed on blocks or flat out got bowled over...it's hard to run when someone's in your face during the handoff exchange. But still, Ross is highly inconsistent.

Conversely, look at the two runs Pittman had. He exploded on both and nearly broke his first one. Although he only got 8-9 yards total on those two runs, those were when NCSU knew for 100% certain we were going to run the ball. You keep Pittman in for a quarter and keep having our OL open up holes like they were yesterday and Pittman is going to bust a couple big ones. Some may say that NCSU was tired at that time, but they weren't too tired to strip the ball from Ross afterwards. Plus the Pittman's a true freshman while Ross is a senior for crying out loud.

helpinghand: What kind of runner was Lydell in high school?

Not a bash Lydell thread:

Just curious as to what kind of runner Lydell was in high school. With the offensive recruits coming in the last few years, Coach Tressel is definitely headed in some sort of direction.

Pittman seemed to have more success running the ball agains a fast NC St defense. The stretch plays where the running back finds the seam and gets there FAST seem to be working for Pittman, but not Ross (when called for him).

My question: Has Lydell outgrown, via the weightroom, the back that he used to be? IIRC, he was a shifty, jitterbug type back coming out of high school and now seems uncomfortable as a "big back."
Thoughts?

He was a decent runner/ATH. At the time, I was supprised he was selected by OSU.

I expect a great game out of him. Staff pushed him hard on tapes and contact on wens/thurs. He is fully aware of his problems and will be working on them.
