Buckeyes running back has rushed for 1,118 yards in nine games against ranked teams

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Chris "Beanie" Wells will soon decide whether he wants to return for his senior season at Ohio State or make himself available for the NFL draft.
If he had a say in the matter, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez would like the 6-foot-1, 237-pound Wells to turn pro by Saturday.
"Maybe the biggest difference between Beanie and some of the other backs we've faced ? and we've faced good ones ? is just his size," Rodriguez said this week during preparations for Saturday's rivalry game between the Wolverines and Buckeyes. "He's got the speed, but he's such a big, physical player. Lot of times he just stiff arms guys and breaks out of tackles and he can outrun you. You can't just go up and wrap your arms around him. You've got to actually tackle him."
Wells is perhaps the most important figure in the 105th meeting of the old rivals. With a freshman, Terrelle Pryor, starting at quarterback for the 10th-ranked Buckeyes, it's unlikely that conservative coach Jim Tressel will take many chances. That means Wells will be likely called upon often against a Wolverines defense surrendering 128 yards a game on the ground.
Tressel said Wells has earned that responsibility.
"You don't get knighted as a guy that's going to play good in that (big) game," he said. "You have to go do it against good people."
Wells certainly has. He's a big-game hunter ? and there's nothing bigger in these parts than Michigan vs. Ohio State.

COLUMBUS In a dingy visitor's locker room on a cold and dreary Ann Arbor Saturday, the big back who was often seen and rarely heard, spoke. It was so unusual that Chris "Beanie" Wells would address his teammates before a game ? or at all ? that Todd Boeckman did a double take when he looked up and saw it was Wells talking and tears running down his cheeks.

Before last season's Michigan game, Wells challenged his teammates to send their seniors out right. In a nutshell, Wells reminded them how big the Michigan moment is.

"I just told them, 'Nothing you do in life compares to this moment,' " Wells said. "We have to leave it all on the field because 20 years from now, you don't want to look back and say, 'Dang, I wish I would have done this. I wish I would have gone a little harder here. I wish I would have blocked a little better there.' "

When it comes to playing big in big games, Wells is at the front of the class. Despite a junior season that started with Heisman Trophy talk and has lingered on with a foot injury, Wells could be poised to play in his final Ohio State-Michigan game Saturday afternoon at Ohio Stadium.

"The biggest difference between Beanie and some of the other backs we've faced ... is just his size," Rodriguez said. "He's got the speed. He's such a big physical player."

The only Michigan killer badder than Wells was Troy Smith. But in big games, Wells is Head Coach Jim Tressel's go-to man. Without fail, he delivers.

Last season when wind and rain made it impossible to throw the ball against Michigan, Wells ran it down the Wolverines' throats. He rushed 39 times for 222 yards, the most any Ohio State back has rushed for against Michigan. Wells scored both of OSU's touchdowns in that win. He ran and Michigan knew he was running, and he still wasn't stopped.

During Wells' freshman season, he touched the ball four times against Michigan. He broke a 52-yard run that gave the Buckeyes a 14-7 lead.

"If you go back into the history of the Ohio State-Michigan game, quite often you point to the people that stepped up and had extraordinary performances," Tressel said. "When the game's over and someone has won, you say, 'Hey, that was a huge reason why that team won the game.'

"But you have to go out and earn that. You don't get knighted as a guy that's going to play good in that game. You have to do it against good people."

D.L.Beanie Wells, looking like the best back in the land as far as the NFL is concerned.
I do this story on projecting the draft status of the Buckeyes every year around this time, and I always have extra info that doesn't get into the paper. So this year I'm throwing it all here. This is the Beanie Wells section, but also look for further info on Malcolm Jenkins, James Laurinaitis, Brian Robiskie, Marcus Freeman, Alex Boone and Todd Boeckman.

"If he can prove he's healthy, (his foot's) not going to be a big deal at all. Last year with Jonathan Stewart, there was a lot of talk about how healthy he was, and he had postseason surgery and his grade didn't diminish much because that kid can flat out play. Same thing with Beanie Wells - he can flat out play.
"I think he's the best back in the draft. The one guy who would get a little bit of talk would be Knowshon Moreno from Georgia (a redshirt sophomore who could declare for the draft), and he's very dynamic but he doesn't have the top end speed and he isn't that big, and Beanie Wells is both."
