RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Ohio State football: Beanie blazes through OSU Pro Day
by Doug Lesmerises
Friday March 13, 2009

* Beanie Wells knew he needed to better his 40 time after his performance at the NFL Combine, when he ran a 4.59.

Wells said he came back to Columbus and got to work with OSU strength and conditioning coach Eric Lichter on exploding more effectively out of his starts. He said he was working until 10 p.m. some nights. And it worked.

Wells unofficially ran somewhere between a 4.34 and 4.46 on the fast track at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Friday. Most scouts figure that the track at the WHAC is so fast, adding a .1 of a second to every time gets a more accurate reading. Even if that's the case, Wells might be talking about running in the mid 4.4s instead of nearly 4.6.

One scout I spoke with said he wasn't worried about Wells' speed coming in, but if anyone was, Wells answered that question.

He had fallen to the No. 31 pick in the latest mock drafts by Mel Kiper and Todd McShay in ESPN.com, talked about as maybe the third or fourth running back taken.

I must imagine that after this performance, Wells is back in the talk to be the No. 1 back taken, and looking again at the top 15 of the draft.

Pro day: The "real" times
OK, we've got a pretty good handle on the 40 times from pro day today. The times I'm going to list here are a range, where most of the 29 teams had the players....it doesn't mean some teams didn't have a guy a few ticks faster (or slower), but these are the best, most reliable ranges we can give you:

BEANIE WELLS: 4.39 to 4.42 -- The star of the day, clearly. One team had him at 4.34. He lowered his combine time by a full .2

Garfield grad singled out by Lions' coach after pro day workouts

COLUMBUS: Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz didn't mean to single out anyone Friday when cornered in the hallway after Ohio State's pro day workouts were complete.

But he let a little something slip anyway.

''They were all good in the drills,'' Schwartz said. ''I think 'Beanie' Wells ran better than he did at the combine. I was up front when he ran and that was impressive.''

An endorsement from the team that holds the No. 1 pick in the April 25-26 NFL Draft is encouraging, even though the chances of the junior from Garfield High School going first are extremely slim. But it also seemed significant that Chris Wells caught the eye of Schwartz, a noted numbers guy and detail freak.

Wells ran the 40-yard dash in a disappointing 4.59 seconds at the combine last month. On his home turf at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, Wells clocked between 4.39 and 4.42, the median of about 20 teams' times.

Wells said he was told he went as low as 4.34.

''I definitely feel relieved,'' Wells said. ''[At the combine] I wasn't relaxed at all; I fought it the whole way. Today I was relaxed. I slept in my own bed, ran in my own backyard. I couldn't ask for any more.''

Asked what this did for his draft status, Wells said, ''I'm not sure. I hope it was a big deal.''

Wells also got a workout in the passing drills, with Jacksonville running backs coach Kennedy Pola playing quarterback.

''I definitely think it's important for me,'' Wells said. ''A lot of people tend to think Ohio State running backs can't catch the ball because they don't see us do it in the game. I went out there and proved I have really good hands.''

Bengals to consider Beanie Wells with No. 6 pick
By Carlos "Big C" Holmes

The Cincinnati Bengals have the sixth overall selection in this year's NFL draft and will be in search of an impact player on either offense or defense. The prospect evaluation process has long begun and the franchise is beginning to narrow down its choices.

One impact player ranked high on the team's list is Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells. The Bengals have a need for a playmaker at the running back position behind starter Cedric Benson and Wells is scheduled to visit the organization in Cincinnati the first week of April.

Wells may have put himself back in the running as a potential Top 5 pick after an explosive performance at the school's pro day on March 13, rebounding from a so-so showing at the Scouting Combine last month.

"It was big for me to perform well at the pro day," Wells said in a recent phone interview. "I knew deep down that I could do better in my 40-time than I did at the combine. It was more of a personal thing for me. It felt great when I crossed that finish line and heard my times."

The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Wells was clocked as low as 4.34 and as high as 4.42 in the 40-yard dash. I'm told that he also fared well during position drills, grabbing the attention of all 32 team representatives in attendance.

Why are you guys saying for Beanie's sake you hope he doesn't get drafted early? Given the choice, do you think Beanie would rather go 6th to the Bengals or thirty-something to a super bowl team? I think he'd take a top ten pick any day. In the NFL, every team starts of the year fresh. Beanie is looking to cash in, I hope for HIS sake, and for Buckeye nation, that he goes as early as possible.

It's not the spot, it's the team.

Bengals First Round Draft Picks

This list might help you understand why no one except Bengals fans want him to go there. Not to mention they perennially suck, and I would prefer to see him play for a winner. He'll get his money wherever he goes, don't worry.

My dream has been for the Bengals to get Beanie. He's Dillon with break away speed. Would fit perfectly in this division. If the Bengals want to beat Pittsburgh and Baltimore they must find that power running game.

I would love to see Palmer play with a great back like Beanie. He's never had a RB teams had to really respect. Together they could do some serious damage.
