RB Carlos "El Guapo" Hyde (Official Thread)

I agree that Beanie was a hard hitter but if force = mass * acceleration, I think Mr Hyde may have him on both... but that's a guess. Either way, damn nice to see.

A problem here is that he is not accelerating, but rather running at about the same rate. If there is acceleration, it is insignificant. What you are looking for is momentum, which is p=mass*velocity. Drayton is doing poorly in the mass and velocity parts of that equation, and he pays for it.

I just wanna know what the button sequence on the Wii does that.

I admit to rewinding that at least five times to see that. Who was the last back we had who really punished people like that?

+2 +3 more

Probably MoC in the one year he gave us. Before that, I'd say Keith Byars.

Nothing against Carlos Hyde, I'm very much looking forward to his bruising punishing attack, but in recent years, people will have to live up to this: Focus on 9 seconds, 1:02, 1:12, 1:35, 2:25

I was skeptical of Carlos Hyde last year. I thought he looked overweight and lacked the ability to hit holes when the primary hole was plugged. He looks like a different dude this year, like Coach Meyer said. We'll see if that translates to the field.

^^ This

He ran over a 40 year old coach guys..Beanie/MoC/Byars comparisons will not be warranted until we see stuff like that against Big Ten defenders.

I'm a huge fan of Carlos Hyde. But...

Beanie was a special back at Ohio State. I believe he's the most physically gifted RB I've seen play for the Buckeyes. His only problem then (and now) is his durability. His violent style of running probably correlates directly to his durability issues.

Then again, he could run like Franco Harris and never risk injury but who among us would like to see that?

Hyde has a long ways to go to be put in the Beanie Wells category at Ohio State.

Hyde has not approached freshman beanie let alone the junior version. Let's just enjoy Hyde for who he is, especially since Meyer does not need a back to excel inside of a phone booth like Tressel's offense usually did.

That said toughness was a primary weakness of Beanie. His physical gifts were elite if not the greatest of any back to play here. His stiff arm was well deserving of fanfare and a nickname.

Yet his toughness and physicality was not on par with Pittman or Boom, let alone Maurice. Too many confused his stiff arm and potential power with his actual toughness and physicality.

Hyde runs hard but doesn't have the vision, burst or power of Beanie. so far this fall Hyde has greatly improved his vision and attitude, which is exciting since he was pretty productive last year when both were major weaknesses.

OSU doesn't need a feature back that has scouts salivating. They already have a game changing runner at QB. They need a reliable back to pound the rock inside and allow Braxton, Philly and Hall to work outside where they are much more dangerous.

This. Seriously guys.

If awards were given out for impressing during practice, I can think of a certain running back, currently on the roster, who elicited numerous comparisons to Eddie George, Beanie Wells, hell even to Archie. It's much too early to even think of those comparisons

Given the fact that it's the off-season, and it is a message board... I don't see anything wrong with comparisons.

I mean, I don't mind comparisons. But some of the posts seem to be implying that Beanie didn't "punish" people that way or that Carlos is so much bigger/faster. Beanie was damn strong AND damn fast, which is what made him so special. Check out his race with Hightower, who runs a ~4.4 [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt42ezeRQV4"]Tim Hightower vs Chris "Beanie" Wells 40 Yard Dash - Race - YouTube[/ame]

I'm a huge Beanie homer so I might be biased :!

Same here. He had a mean streak that no one else in the NCAA had at the time. Ran with great anger and determination. Here's to hoping Hyde fills those shoes, because they are big shoes to fill.

Just my opinion but the biggest stride we will see in Hyde's career will come with the success of Braxton's passing game.

When future opposing defenses begin to respect the OSU passing game based on QB performance, the concentration on our traditionally-rich running game wont be most of the focus.

Hyde has the tools, question will be whether the the positions around him will be an asset to his game.

College football locals: Naples High grad Carlos Hyde to seek yards in new Buckeyes attack

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State's top back the past two seasons, Dan Herron, graduated. His heir apparent, Jordan Hall, is still recuperating after a quirky midsummer mishap.

With the days dwindling until the 18th-ranked Buckeyes' opener against Miami (Ohio), coach Urban Meyer is hoping that he has a worthy replacement ready.

"I think Carlos Hyde is (the) guy," Meyer said of the 235-pound junior and Naples High graduate. "He had a Wednesday practice in the spring where he was a legitimate tailback. Unfortunately he didn't have a Monday, Friday, Saturday to follow up the Wednesday practice. (But) he's really solid."

If that sounds like faint praise, it parallels the reaction Ohio State coaches had a year ago to Hyde.

Hyde started fast in the early games last year but then saw his playing time wilt away to nothing. He rushed for 93 and 76 yards in the first two games, scoring two touchdowns. His best game was 104 yards on 13 carries and two scores in a win over Nebraska in week six. Outside of gaining 105 yards in a rout of Indiana, he had just 16 attempts for 61 yards in the other six games coming down the stretch.

"Last year was like a roller coaster," said the native Floridian. "It was just sometimes, I'm out there and I'd have good games, and next game I wouldn't get in at all."

I might agree with this comment. I think almost as important will be Braxton's first step after the hand off..if he can freeze a linebacker for just that split second, Carlos IMO will break the arm tackles.
